AFF banners very slow again - solution?

My AFF (and cams.com) banners are very slow again today, sometimes they won't even load at all.

I was thinking of a php script that pings the banner servers from aff and if the response time is very high, it shows a banner that I saved on my server instead of a geo-targetted one from the AFF servers. Of course, the pinging wouldn't happen every single pageview, but with a chron job (for example). Has anyone tried something like this?

This would be cool, then I can start using their geo targeted banners again (or at least put them somewhere other than the bottom of my page).

I had something like that a couple years ago

a certain sponsors join page would go down quite a bit so I made a .exe to ping it every X minutes and if it was over the specified timeout it would replace the links for me a php version with cron wouldnt be a bad idea ( didnt know much about cron back then )

I tried implementing it and it seems that the ping response from banners.adultfriendfinder.com is good (always < 200ms). So it's not the connection that is slow, but the software implemented on the server. Therefor, a simple ping won't do the trick, the script will have to request the whole banner and see how slow the server responds.

A script like the one I want would still show the banner, without lag, if the AFF server is slow. This way, I won't have geo-targetted ads, but I will still send some traffic to the AFF page (although the amount is a lot less than with geo-targetted ads).
