How Do People "Tip" In Your Country?

So after travelling thru 4 different countries in the past couple of weeks I have seen a lot of tipping differences from place to place and country to country.

In Canada we tip 15-20% of the bill for food and alcohol but when I was in Ireland you do not tip the bartenders for drinks but you do tip the waiters for food purchases. My aunt even gave me shit when I tipped the concierge 5 euros for taking our bags for us upstairs.

What is the tip percentage or method in your city/country?

i usually still tip like crazy if the service is good no matter what the country.

years ago when i was in sophia, bulgaria we had an awesome waiter at a little restaurant and the whole meal was maybe $15 US, i tipped the guy $5 US and he didnt want to take the money.

i know $5 isnt alot to us but to him that was a days salary

I'm a cheap bastard. I don't tip unless the service was amazingly good. They get paid an hourly wage. If they can't put out a little extra effort, fuck it. I"ll save my tip for more beer at the next stop. =)

We tip 15 to 18 % . that is the norm in the states, so we do it here in mexico as well. If the service sucks they get 15 and we do go higher sometimes.

We have a friend here that has a restaurant, and a very nice place. on overage 60$ for 2 people. She pays her waiters 6$ a day, and then they get tips. They are making a dollar more per day, than the average factory worker. Her chef makes 300$ a week.

I live in Paris and here waiters get 15% no matter what (it's included in the bill). You better be nice to them if you want anything, begging 10 minutes for water is normal here.

Most people tip a few Euros on top of the included 15%.

Here you aren't supposed to tip at restaurants, a 10% gratuity is included on every bill by law and gets divided evenly among the staff. The service in restaurants is generally so bad though that you'd never want to tip any more.

In other industries some people work only on tips (guys who bag your groceries and carry them to the car for example), but 25-50 cents is a lot of money for them so I don't mind.

you're right - you're cheap AND a bastard. there is no country i've heard of where the waiters/waitresses are paid well. it is generally accepted that they work for tips, and what's more, i bet you know that. they generally get an hourly wage that is minimum wage or a little above. thank goodness there aren't more people like you!

I normally tip 20 % . If service is awesome I'l give 33 %. If it sucks I'l give 10 % or less .

Service is pretty good @ places I go thought.

Norm is 15 % tip.

Depending on where you dine/drink in the u.k, tipping is usually included in the bill. Last time I checked it was about ~7%. It's not a custom here, but the mark-up on most items makes you resent wanting to tip. When I was in the U.S prices on food/drink were substantially lower, and tipping wasn't an issue... but when you have to pay a fiver for a pint of watered down beer in London, you really dont want to tip anyone. /rant.

yah, but here in costa rica, 2 bucks USD is around 960 colones, which is way way too much to tip the grocery guy. 100-200 colones is more normal.

and as the previous poster said, a 10% tax is included in your restaurant bills anyway, so i don't ever tip. i have gringo friends that tip, for whatever reason, but i don't. i'm not in america, i don't abide by american customs/rules/traditions. i live in costa rica, therefore i live by tico customs/rules/traditions. and here, you don't tip additionally at restaurants.

Uhm... here in belgium they make as much/less as any shopclerk, factory worker, etc. Service and taxes are included in the bill and from that bill their boss gives them an hourly wage.
You tip the guy that placed the seats in your car at the factory or the girl that did the wrapper around your candybar?
Don't get me wrong I do tip, if the service has been good. But never 15%. Depending on the bill. Mostly just round it up to the next multitude of 5.

In Cancun it is usually 10%, but coming from the US we don't feel comfortable with tipping that low, so we usually tip 15-20%, besides, wages here are crap and every little bit helps out people who live on a few dollars a day.

You don't have to tip in Germany really. It isn't expected unless the service was good. I tip because I'm used to the 15-20% tipping from the US, but my friends always look at me like I'm being a cocky motherfucker by tipping the waiter/waitress a couple bucks when the service was good. Fuck that. If they know they probably won't get much of a tip and still put effort into their job, they deserve my money.

Even if the service is bad, you should at least leave something. In most places the server has to tip out the kitchen, the busser, AND and bartender, which usually works out to about 5% of their sales, so if you dont tip, they have to pay for you to eat there, which is not fair to anyone.

Most of the times it's already included in the bill (you're not obligated to pay it, but I don't recommend coming back if you don't pay). I tip a bit more sometimes.

We usually tip 15 to 20 percent here. I know when I lived in Florida, they are only required to pay "tipped" employees something like $3.15/hr. In Canada, they get min.wage, so if it sucks......no tippy for you!!!!

I am not sure what you mean, but basically they make it so the server has to supplement other peoples incomes with their tips. Everyone usually makes minimum wage which is $8 where I live.

What I'm getting at is it's the employers responsibility to pay their staff... not the customer and not other staff members.

What a shitty system.

if the service is bad, i don't feel obligated. i'm not a picky person, and i can understand if the chef gives the waiter the wrong food. so if i feel the service is bad, it is. being surly shouldn't be rewarded.

not here. when i was managing a bar, it was legal to pay LESS than minimum wage (which you can't live on) to servicing persons because the government felt that they would make tips. where i live, minimum wage is like $6 and our one bedroom apartment is $1000, and a one-way bus trip could easily run over $1.50. so i tip - and anyway, i usually get extra nice service, which always deserves a reward imo.
