ehhhh, this is what I was afraid of. I was hoping I could get something reasonable, but it's starting to sound like I should just start loosening up the rectum muscles and prepare to be fiscally raped....

It SHOULD be pretty cheap for a 2 year old. I was paying about $85 a month for full coverage on my son when he was 20 - a 2 year old should be less than that.

The last place I checked was Blue Cross, and I thought it was $300 or so a month... I'll check again and be happy as all getout if it's only $80!

Maybe I clicked the wrong box or something... I'll update in a bit.

really depends on what plan you go with and what state you live in. I got a pretty good plan with Blue Cross / Blue Shield for only $80/month

It's tough with insurance, I'm a full time webmaster and don't have any kind of insurance. I feel that the occasional doctor bill is still cheaper than $1000-$2000 per month that it'd cost for me, my wife, and 3 kids. You figure in a year, that's $12-24K per year just pissed away.

Just hope none of you gets sick or is in an accident. You can get catastrophic insurance for less than $1K a month for a family and since you can easily hit $12K in a day or two at the hospital, it's smart to at least have SOMETHING.

A family member just had an emergency hospital stay and the bill came to $250,000.

Without insurance, you'd be fucked for the whole amount.

Hope your kids don't get sick.

Really, get health insurance now... it's not a waste of money.

If you have a regular business, join the local chamber of commerce.

They offer group plans that can be much more affordable for small businesses.

Yeah, Peaches and Hunter, you both have a good point there. Maybe I should look into something. I can defiantely afford it no problem, it's just the thought of me handing over that kind of money and not getting anything out of it, but then again, you never know. I'm only 31 now, so I kept thinking maybe closer to 40 would be better to get it.

Accidents and sickness can happen at ANY age - even your kids Seriously, there are a lot of catastrophic policies with high deductibles that would protect you (and keep you in a decent hospital since in most states you can be transfered to the "free" hospital if it's not medically dangerous to do so).

I was in a motorcycle accident in my 20's and had a bleeding ulcer in my 30's. Both ran about $25K each. Shit happens. And if you own ANYTHING and make any money, the providers can sue you and you lose everything. It's just not worth the risk, IMHO.

Honestly, I think health insurance should be required just like car insurance is. Most of the 40mil people that aren't insured in the US are like you - they CAN afford, just don't think it's needed. Poor people are covered by the govt. and really rich folks (read: Bill Gates) can afford to pay for medical bills and not have to worry, but those of us in the middle really need insurance.
