Who makes the best "retail" PC?

I have owned a few Sony VAIO's and they were amazing but I can't help but notice that Sony's cutting edge technology is lacking behind.

I love the new Alienware ALX but they are pricey but I guess you get what you pay for when you want the best.

http://www.alienware.com/alx_pages/main_alx.aspx

Can anybody recommend some good "pre-built" PC's?

Thanks

My Dell Inspiron 5150 fell apart and it was never mobile.. It just sat on the desk. I won't say that I wont ever buy a Dell again but its not gonna happen anytime soon.

Yeah Danny just bought the best Alienware laptop and he burns his hands on the damn thing. Close the door in his bedroom and it heats the room up. Crazy.

But the ALX systems are liquid cooled so I would imagine that would solve the heat issues.

We've used HP's in our offices for years and they have been very reliable. On the other hand, I bought a Dell desktop for a contractor recently and it was a complete POS, unlike their servers.

It comes assembled, all you need to do is pop in some memory and hook your monitor up and its ready to go. 10-20 mins tops.

So lets recap.. Dell sux balls, toshiba only makes notebooks and building my own is not a solution since this thread was specificaly started searching for the best "retial PC" on the market today.

You guys are not much help.. lol

I think Ailenware is the best even thou its way over priced. Sony VAIO seems to be decent value but I hate the fact that I am buying a new PC with older parts.

These are a bit overpriced too (though less than Alienware) but the quality is awesome.

I dont think you get it.

Retial companies spend BIG $$$ on reserch and development to make sure all hardware works well together. They also include "recovery cd's" so that when you want to format the PC it takes 20mins to get it back the way it was the day you bought it. Also the towers are always 10x better looking on retial setups.

There aren't any.. They are all overpriced.. befriend a nerd at some computer club and get him to pay YOU to build YOUR pc.. tell him if he mows your lawn you will let him "help" you build a kickass pc , but when all the shit gets there , just let him do all the work and watch a movie or something.

I have a couple friends ( not nerds ) who are fanatics about building pc's. I would just pop the shit together , but they coat , wire and cool these sytems like no others, and are always glad to do it, i just give them a whack of parts and come back the next day to some cool freon cooled shit that rocks.

Those look interesting but I don't like that fact that their systems are AMD only. I always prefer Intel over AMD.

You have some good points, but of all the "retail" pc's i have troubleshot. The recovery cd never works ( and you can make those yourself anyways )and the towers dont impress me much ( alienware has some slick shit , but honestly i dont look at the pc much.. )

Hardware conflict is the MOST important factor you mentioned.. some shit just doesn;t like other shit.. most retail companies try very hard to debug that shit before they put them out , but invariably you end up adding something into the mix that throws off something else anyways..

Aleinware's overpriced.

Dell's are not good. The way their mobo's are have always been a problem in regards to if something big goes wrong, you have a lot to replace. It's been a problem with them for a long time.

That being said, if you just need a PC period, you can get by on it. If you want a high powered PC for video editing, and a lot of the bells and whistles because you do a lot of work like that, you need a custom built on.

Retail can fit an average user, but they are not going to be good for a heavy user for someone who needs to do a lot of different things (games, video editing, etc). You either have to pay through the nose for upgrades, or setting it up specifically for all that.

The main point is you can buy the best components, and do a custom built, probably cheaper than going into a retail outlet, trying to get the same, and paying more for it.

Buy an HP and be done with it.

The HP I'm typing this on is 3 years old, runs W2K3 flawlessly, and has never given me a problem (even though I chain smoke near the open cage).
