GoDaddy, yes or no? Alternatives?

Hey,
I want to register some new domains and I heard from a lot people that GoDaddy is very reliable, but now I heard exactly the opposite.
Where do you get your domains from? And why are you (not) using GoDaddy?

I've heard of major problems with GoDaddy such as domain thefts etc. GoDaddy will do nothing to help you. Avoid them like the plauge.

GoDaddy is very cheap and reliable, we have there more than 1500 domains registered.

Anyway, Godaddy advertising pages are a shit, you need to get into several steps to buy your domain.

I prefer to use DirectNIC.com for "special" domains. It's not the cheapest but it's very fast and secure as well. I have more than 200 domains there too.

Don't use godaddy, esp. if the domain is for biz or profit. If someone randomly picks one of your domains to forge their headers with when they spam, or if someone just blatantly lies and says they're receiving spam from your domain, you have cp on your site, etc., godaddy will change your nameservers and lock you out without even asking questions. Even if you prove that it's not true and that you're not at fault, they still won't release your domain back to you until you pay them a fee ($80, I think).

I use registerfly.

Thank you Holly for actually telling us WHY they are bad for adult and what can go wrong. I'll now look into switching.

With what you said about forged headers... that could happen to my non-adult domains, too. Thanks for the warning.

Now to see who is the best choice for transfers...

I decided for namecheap.com
They have currently a offer - you get the whois private thing for free.

I had some technical problems during the register-phase, but now everything is ok.

Yeah, and I thought that they are the cheapest - but that's completly wrong. Esp. the private function costs 9$/year/domain.

Namecheap has currently the private function for free and registerfly offer it for 1$/year/domain.

I had to pay 53$/year for my 3 three domains at godaddy, and now I paid 26$ - thanks god that there is a forum called GFY!

Thanks for the info, but I already bought my domains through namecheap.com. And it was 50% cheaper than with Godaddy + I could pay with paypal.

What she said. But then it is also clear in their terms that they can and will pull shit like that. A bit longwinded but it's one of the most important parts of your business so usually worth reading the TOS of a prospective host or domain company.

For the most part those who say GoDaddy are great are the sort of people who never think shit will happen to them. But then they are usually also the ones who scream the loudest when it does. My personal view is I simply can't afford to take the risk.

Oh - and I use directnic simply because the few times I've needed support over the years it has been fantastic. To me that's worth an extra few bucks each year.
