:mad Ever had a credit card app declined?

I make significantly more than the average Australian wage, I live well within my means (saved up a 5% home deposit in only a few months without sacrificing my lifestyle), and my existing card has a modest limit and $0 owing - it's paid in full every month.

My newest application was declined... by the SAME company that I have an existing car loan with! They send me junk mail saying I'm preapproved for new loans because they love the fact that I have never missed a payment. WTF did they decline my card application?

I'm in Australia, we don't have a credit score. The credit record system here only lists

- enquiries (eg "Bank ABC enquired regarding a loan of $100,000")
- defaults

...for the past 7 years.

The company I applied for the card with didn't request any extra documentation either, all they had was the figures that I put onto the application.

=^..^=: My mum wanted to raise her card limit from $1k to $2k a couple of years ago. Even though she had been with the bank for 20 years and had never defaulted or overdrawn they made her fill out an application form that asked detailed questions about her income and means to repay. Fucking idiots. My own bank regularly sends me invitations for preapproved limit raises by entering a special code onto the web site.

I have. Sometimes they'll decline you if you've recently made a large purchase (car), even if your credit is otherwise perfect. I've also been declined by mistake. I never get department store cards, but getting a Sears card allowed me to save 20% on a $1500 washer/dryer set, and not have to pay it off for a year. Sears declined me outright! It turned out one of the credit bureaus had zero information on me, like I was a kid or something that hadn't bought new cars, etc. A few calls straightened things out.

I got declined once by a store, since I have several credit cards I was pretty pissed off, so I wrote to them sending copies of my AMEX statements and other stuff to say "hey you fuckers" whats your game refusing me, they gave me the card aftyer that. The thing was I never used the card onc and it was "auto suspended"

Just write to them showing you are an OK credit risk.

hottoddy: I just checked my online record and my bank did an enquiry about our new home loan the day before I applied for the card. Oops. I guess that's a big red flag... of course the card company don't know that the loan has been approved, just that I was applying for it.

The card I was applying for is also a store card with a 10% discount voucher as an introductory offer, plus 6 months interest free. The 10% discount is the real reason I wanted to apply, since it was a $2k purchase. It doesn't really make much difference that it's declined, because the store guy could see I was getting pretty frustrated (it was my second visit there) and he knocked the price down to $1799 anyway. Because it was a straight purchase and not interest free I still have a couple of weeks to find somewhere else that can beat this price, and get refunded 110% of the difference. They should have just given me the damn card and I would have been happy to leave the price.

I think credit companies are just tight with people who are self employed. I make 4X the amount my wife does - and I was able to prove it with two years worth of personal tax returns, bank statements, business activity statements. The bank still made 2 enquiries to my credit file, but made ZERO enquiries on my wife's file. All she needed to provide was a recent payslip. I don't think they even contacted her employer. Remember this is for a 30 year home loan for hundreds of thousands of $.

Oh well... as long as I'm working for myself it's not the first time that things like this will happen...
