Porn allegations surround school technician
Gwinnett worker may lose license

A Gwinnett County Schools computer technology coordinator could lose his teaching license for allegedly storing 3,400 clips of "explicit" pornography on his work station and creating a database using confidential student information.

The former school employee, Robert D. Grant, 35, of Dacula, recently resigned his position during an investigation into professional mis- conduct.

Gwinnett's chief human resource officer Frances Davis filed a letter of complaint against Grant with officials in the Educator Ethics Division of the Georgia Professional Standards Commission this week.

Grant, an employee since 1996, is accused of misuse of school equipment.

During a recent investigation, school officials found evidence Grant was surfing pornographic Web sites on school time and hacking into secured Gwinnett schools files to create a database using school technology and confidential student information.

"All our information on employees and students is not open to everybody in the district," Davis said. "He gained unauthorized access" to create the database. "[Grant's] work station also had over 3,400 clips of explicit adult pornography, including pictures and movies. The pornography is unprofessional behavior as an educator. This stuff was done during work hours."

Officials at the PSC received the complaint against Grant Wednesday. Grant, who earned $50,000 a year, was reprimanded by a principal in connection with two other allegations of misconduct.

"The commission has not voted whether to investigate this or not," said Vicky Brantley, director of the Educator Ethics Division. "We will present the complaint to them next month."

Grant could not be reached for comment.

He was hired Aug. 16, 1996 as a local school technology coordinator, a computer expert who provides assistance to teachers during staff development. He worked as a technology coordinator at Duluth Middle School and as head baseball coach at Duluth High.

On Jan. 22, 2002, he received a letter of reprimand for a relationship at work with a married employee that caused a scene on the job.

"You admitted to me and Dr. Frances Davis that you were involved in a 'personal relationship' with another teacher," wrote Principal Kay Harvey. "This relationship has . . . caused an unprofessional situation to occur in the parking lot of Duluth Middle School."

The letter also scolded Grant for allegedly giving his building security code to a high school colleague so the teacher could gain access to Duluth Middle.

"Further violations from your personal business interfering with your professional duties could result in disciplinary actions to include termination of your contract," Harvey wrote.

Grant was administratively placed at the GIVE Center as a technology coordinator in August 2003. He remained there until his resignation, Davis said.
