Damn...need a whizz kid

...I installed a second drive (60 gigs) and have been since noon trying to get it set up right. I have both of my drives set up as dynamic drives now but I wanted to mirror and the mirror tab is not active. I am using Windows 2000 Pro. Does anyone know if one can mirror using this operating system?

I don't think you can it. Pretty sure you will need other software.

a RAID2 configuration should allow you to mirror two identical drives.

Do you have a link handy about a RAID2 configuration?

If you dont want to slow your system down, I would reccomend buying a promice IDE raid controller and use their dedicated software to set up the mirror. The controller is CHEAP, and you get WAY better preformance

If I manually copy the contents of the drive with the OS on it to the 2nd drive...if the first drive fails...will the 2nd drive automatically boot up...and vice versa?

You cannot manually copy the drive's contents and have it boot. You can copy the entire drive to a new one using disk copy, drive image, or ghost.

Win 2000 Pro has shitty support for mirroring, and even if it did have good support, on a PC... your best bet is to start with a clean drive and enable mirroring before installing the OS. If you're gonna re-load your OS, do your self a favor and upgrade to XP. You can install your raid drivers at the beginning of the setup and save yourself a lot of headaches.

no - you have to set up a REAL mirror - cant just copy it manually.
If the "first" disk breaks, then you "break the mirror" by using the hardware encoded disksoftware. That way you can select the "working" disk as the one to boot from

FYI... make sure you are using identical drives... size and model if you are doing IDE RAID mirroring on a PC. If not, you could have serious compatibiltiy problems.

if you use a RAID setup, the remaining drives are actually able to reconsruct the data on the other drives if one should fail. it also allows for faster access to the information stored on the drive. i'm sure microsoft online has articles on it.
