Has anyone experimented with building something like this? I wonder how large of a device would be needed to harvest 500 watts(~40A) of energy for charging my battery bank.

Dude our entire primary school made this in DIY class, ok not the girls, but its nothing new...google crystal radio it works without a battery...you can harvest thermal and static the same way...the coolest thing I made in electro engineering class in primary school was a police siren...

I had a kit from Radio Shack a long time ago that made a radio. I don't remember if it had a battery or not.

Any idea of the scale it would have to be to push 30-40 amps of DC?

You can barely hear the crystal radio...the energy harvvested is insignificant...you would need a unit as big as a building...

People love to dream about Tesla's free energy idea, but the truth is that it just isn't efficient. Energy you receive drops off very sharply the further you get away from it. Wires are a much more efficient way to deliver power.

The kid didn't invent anything either, sorry to say. We're surrounded by energy in the form of light, radio, wifi, etc. You already know its possible to capture it, but capturing enough so you can power things is expensive.

A Crystal radio works the same way. You're surrounded by enough radio energy to actually hear it with a radio with no external power. A long antenna, a coil with a tap, a capacitor, a diode, a transformer, an earphone and a ground is all you need. (Yes I used to build them too! Fun!)

You are wrong here. Course radio waves that surround us can be easily turned into electricity by just a 20 meter wire. It will be enough even to lite a small lamp (ok, a diode). But this is a very different kind of power. Not human-made one. The Earth is a HUGE electrical engine. It has a rotor and a stater (you should be learning this scheme in the school). So it does generate a mad power. When I say mad, i mean something which is really MAD which can't be produced by humans using all the existing resources and technologies.. Even nuclear energy is nothing comparing to that our planet generates every millisecond.

So when all those "tesla" generators (there are many types of them) take the electricity from "nowhere" (it's not so of course). They take it from our planet. The theoretically no energy can be only in absolutely vacuum, with absolute zero temperature and a zero gravity. In a place where even the time doesn't exist. But it's just a theory. Practically we know it is possible to get an absolutely incredible power and mass(!) from literally nothing. E=mc^2 - it's a formula of the Universe. 99.99999% of people says "ah I know it! Einstein has invented that formula!" They really know it. They know Einstein, but they have no idea what exactly it does mean.

From what I understand, the energy of the earths rotating core is partially converted into electromagnetic energy, but over the earth, the way a magnets field of magnetism surrounds it. The Magnetosphere protects the earth from solar windds, etc. To capture some of this energy, wouldn't the device have to be in the magnetosphere to work?

E=MC^2 doesn't mean energy from nothing, and it doesn't mean that you can get power from literally nothing. What it says is (E)Energy = M(Mass) X C (The speed of Light) squared. Anyway, i don't doubt that there's a way to capture energy the way described, it's just not done well yet. We are surrounded by electromagnetic energy (light, radio, even sound). Converting the energy around us into a different kind of energy is a great idea and should be pursued and I have no doubt we'll get there.

Here's an idea for you: We're surrounded by wifi signals now. Wouldn't it be great if we could charge our cellphones by wifi? It's a crazy idea, but it's not impossible.

Course the Magnetosphere does protect us from solar wings, but it does also produce a huge amount of the electric power. That's not some kind of magic shield. That's a huge electro field (or a shield - name it as you want).

Really? You just invented a nuclear bomb, professor. Congrats on that! But if you were a Russian, you would be able to see the picture when you are looking at the physical formula. I gave you some time to think. Now I believe (at least hope so) that you understood that E=mc^2 is a formula of the World. It really explains something that none of all the existing religions can do even if joined together. Just move the "m" to the left and "E" to the right and divide it by c^2. It's a formula and the math allows you to do it. What do you see now? The "Big Bang Theory" is not just a funny TV show for you anymore? Do you see the Universe in your own mind now?

Einstein was a genius. He did something what nobody could do before him. His formula is as simple as 2+2. It is so and not in a same time. It really works as 2+2, but it explains our World.

P.S. As about the magnetic field. Don't want to be a pain in your ass, but it does exist at the zero level (right at the the Eart's core) and course it does exist at your finger tip, so it can be used by anybody and at any level over the sea ;) It does surround us all the time and everybody can use it to generate the power.
