People love to dream about Tesla's free energy idea, but the truth is that it just isn't efficient. Energy you receive drops off very sharply the further you get away from it. Wires are a much more efficient way to deliver power.
The kid didn't invent anything either, sorry to say. We're surrounded by energy in the form of light, radio, wifi, etc. You already know its possible to capture it, but capturing enough so you can power things is expensive.
A Crystal radio works the same way. You're surrounded by enough radio energy to actually hear it with a radio with no external power. A long antenna, a coil with a tap, a capacitor, a diode, a transformer, an earphone and a ground is all you need. (Yes I used to build them too! Fun!)
