I don't know much about this, but was wondering.

I always thought of Javascript as just a client side browser language. Could Javascript be used to replace something like DNS functions?

Nodejs runs on the server with JavaScript, not sure if that is what they mean though.

Nowadays I only really use JS for little things like dynamic CSS when needed.

Node.js is pretty interesting. I remember reading an article not too long ago that said a new version of Ransomware was written in Javascript.

Which sounded scary, because it gave the impression that the ransomware would execute on loading a page in a browser. But the virus was actually written in Node.js and would have to be executed like any other malicious program.
