What can be done with Javascript now?

I don't know much about this, but was wondering.

I always thought of Javascript as just a client side browser language. Could Javascript be used to replace something like DNS functions?

The buffer overflow would then make it possible for an attacker to remotely execute code and take over the computer, and they could perform this exact same attack on machines all over the world, as the code containing the flaw has been in use since May 2008 and affected all versions of glibc since version 2.9.

Somewhere between base arithmetic and x86 is a sandbox people can’t just walk in and out of. To put it bluntly, if this code had been written in JavaScript – yes, really – it wouldn’t have been vulnerable. Even if this network exposed code remained in C, and was just compiled to JavaScript via Emscripten, it still would not have been vulnerable.
I am old and get confused.

Nodejs runs on the server with JavaScript, not sure if that is what they mean though.

Nowadays I only really use JS for little things like dynamic CSS when needed.

Node.js is pretty interesting. I remember reading an article not too long ago that said a new version of Ransomware was written in Javascript.

Which sounded scary, because it gave the impression that the ransomware would execute on loading a page in a browser. But the virus was actually written in Node.js and would have to be executed like any other malicious program.

Node.js is a JavaScript runtime built on Chrome's V8 JavaScript engine. Node.js uses an event-driven, non-blocking I/O model that makes it lightweight and efficient. The Node.js package ecosystem, npm, is the largest ecosystem of open source libraries in the world. The Node.js project is supported by the [Node.js Foundation](Node.js Foundation | Node.js).

We are replacing, and delegating much PHP scripting to legacy, using server-side JavaScript and client browser JavaScript, JSON and AJAX.

@lezinterracial You have never heard of hostile PHP or other interpreter code? Hostile XSS? The list goes on and will continue. The only hack-proof computer is a computer powered down in a locked room ....

The new .js is not your father's JavaScript trick from 2002 :2 cents:

Wordpress are talking about dumping PHP and doing the whole thing in JavaScript - It's powerful stuff...
