We are just completing the second of 2 cms's we built over the past two years.

I can tell you that this should be the LAST RESORT unless you have a lot of time, patience, and money to deal with the headaches of building a good one from scratch. This is not a slam on the developers I used (2 different developers, 2 different cms's), I actually got off very lucky on the final choices and happy with their work to date and end product.

That being said, there is endless grief, no matter the developer, when you're building a content management system like you're proposing. Including the architecture, testing, additional modifications, etc.. In short, it's not for the faint of heart, that's for sure.

Good luck chief.

Holy shit, THIS. A thousand times, this. Be SO sure you need something custom before you take even a step down this road. 90% chance your project is unfinished, poorly written, poorly documented, written by more than one coder (because you had to fire the others), or is written with old design paradigms.

In this industry, I've had a chance to see a lot of code. I've seen horror stories, with very few exceptions. Major products you have definitely heard of aren't even object oriented, and the overwhelming majority use deprecated methods like mysql or mysqli instead of PDO.

Put some SERIOUS thought into who you choose, and vet them HEAVILY. Multiple RECENT references for COMPLETED jobs of the same scale.

Very, very, very true.

A content management system of any scale is a major undertaking, do not be fooled. Over 15 plus years, we have developed easily a half dozen if not more to use in-house on different projects and websites. Every single one of them has had their challenges along the way. You definitely need to know what you're getting yourself into, and have the money to go the distance.

Finding a good developer who writes solid code, provides good support and communication is like the holy grail of programmers. It takes time to find them. Documentation is another big one that I can assure you is key and should be addressed. Many programmers in the adult industry hate to document ANYTHING. You need to look no further than most of the scripts we all use daily as a prime example. Find a developer that includes this into any project you do. Additionally, get some project management software should you choose to go down this road.

If it takes you 6 months to find the right developer, you really need to spend the 6 months looking for them. I am telling you from bitter experience. You need references (check every one of them), and for projects of the same scale as edgeprod said. It will save you a lot of headaches down the road. This project would be a major financial investment and undertaking. I would recommend you plan accordingly.

Hopefully your good fortune continues to smile on you like a champ with your next project.

Make sure and report back on progress once you have started so we can see how it all worked out for you.
