you should try Windows 8.1 for desktop and Centos v6.4 for servers
but if you're one of those anti-microsoft freaks stick to mac but im a .Net developer so microsoft product is all i use. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...-8/preview-iso |

at work, i'm forced to run windows... At home i run debian on one machine, freeBSD on the other... Windows in a virtual machine for those programs i cannot get to work under linux/BSD.
My VPS's all run debian or ubuntu... They run smoothly without ever needing to reboot I've used fedora for a while, was very stable to...

I have used in the past Ubuntu but had to switch on Windows because of stupid photoshop. Im not the windows hater and it's very good os for someone who doesnt overload pc as much as i do. But in this year only i had to reinstall it 5 times and i went of from windows for good. Im on ubuntu 12 now and it runs preety smooth. Only flash is kinda slow. And for servers i used centos always it can run without reboot for over a year.

FreeBSD is dying out, it's a fact and I used to be a FreeBSD fan myself - because it is the closest relative to the original Unix. Unfortunately a word of advise to those still running it, is pack your things and migrate a soon as you're able to. It's becoming more and more insecure each month. Even the developers themselves are running Linux. For me, CentOS is the choice for large production environments where security and stability are of the utmost importance, for VPS and smaller servers we use Debian for a lower memory footprint. Ubuntu is also a good choice, which is based on Debian and probably easier to understand for novices.

I have been using unix for over twenty years at my old job and this past year been playing with different linux distros, I first used Fedora but I felt the latest version is a little bloated trying to be a desktop replacement like Ubuntu. I installed Debian in July and I'm in love with it, it has just the simple Gnome desktop and I prefer doing everything at the command line anyways. This past weekend I downloaded CentOS and playing with it now, and its very similar to Fedora/Red Hat. Linux has come a long way in the last few years, when I first started using it in the late nineties it took days just to get a server up and running! If your looking for serious work as a Linux sysadmin like I am it looks like either CentOS or Debian is the way to go these days.
