bought laptop, can not pass SUSE linux install, advice needed

I bought laptop, turned it on, it automatically installed Suse linux. I did not setup any username, just root password.
Now it request me to enter username and pasword. I have no username set up. I just need to format my HDD and get rid of this crap, but how do I login?

Make a new user for yourself after you login as root
Add that username to your sudo then logout with root and login with the new user name you made -- do not operate as the root user on the Internet unless you have no choice.
Now, you can make changes in sudo or; type $su root and enter the password
if you want greater security (not adding the new user to the sudo config file) then $su username to go back to that user account.
I do this with Debian distros but should be the same or similar in SUSE.

Windoze is a cancer and the NSA be damned!

Now I have to investigate how to format my HDD so that I would have DOS... For now I am not sure if I found my HDD since I found some "filesystem" which says free space 10 GB while my HDD is 750GB...

Next step - I peaked at biosand did not see option to boot from USB.. Could it be possible that new HP laptop does not have boot from USB option?

DOS? Do you mean Windows? Use the installation media for whatever you want to install and use it's setup utility. In Linux it's fdisk usually but you aren't using that. The partition with 10GB free might possibly be the old linux boot drive or it could also be something like the laptop factory restore partition.

Most new laptops will have the ability to boot from a USB. An older one might not. Look around in the bios more and make sure you look at all the options. Be careful with what you save. If in doubt don't save and do it over.

Look for a forum for whichever OS you are going to install. They will help you and you'll probably need more help later.

DOS. It is always DOS when I buy laptop that has no windows (or linux) licence.

And I want to format HDD in order to get rid of that linux completely and forever.

I could probably stick in Windows DVD and install it on top of linux, but I want to wipe linux permanently from my laptop before I install Windows.

Mint is just a distro based on the Debian O/S so is Ubuntu.
They are prettier and more consumer friendly but Debian is manly LINUX -- HAHA --fight, fight, LOL

However, you need to make some effort to use LINUX.

Windows is a point and click virus alert O/S (I think it wears a skirt). I have one Win7 box for some programs I cant get for LINUX but LINUX is a much more sophisticated and professional operating system that doesn't come with "training-wheels".

Its not relevant. This computer is for my family member and I was asked to install windows. Now I just need to get rid of linux somehow. I even contemplate this tedious task - install windows on top somehow, then after that format the whole disk in hopes that linux would ge gone and install windows again (now on clean HDD)

Not only I can not find all my HDD displayed nowhere in linux interface (appears hat it displays only that single partition of 20GB), but I also can not find how to format that disk. Linux is now curse word for me.

You mean when you insert windows DVD and when you pick in which disk to install it, it allows you option to format said disks? If so - it does not work for me, there is "format" option but it is not clickable which ever of those 5 disk partitions (see screenshot posts above)I choose.

Tried, of course. I found another topic in another forum where somebody stated the exact same thing.
Can't I format HDD from within linux somehow?

If you really want DOS, you could try http://www.freedos.org

But you might be better off with killdisk if you just want to wipe everything and start again.

edit: just read your last post, use killdisk and it will remove everything from the drive.

I think that HP_TOOLS partition might be your recovery partition. If you want you might be able to restore the original windows which was supposed to come with the laptop (assuming it was Windows?). If you want, tell use the model number of the laptop and maybe we can give you simple instructions where you can just press a couple keys at the start to start a factory reinstall.

Other option is I bet at the screen you see in the screenshot you can hit DRIVE OPTIONS (ADVANCED) and then get options to delete partitions if you want. But by doing so you will lose all data on the partitions and if you delete HP_TOOLS you will lose the recovery partition at present. But after deleting the partitions linux should be gone and it ought to be easy to install DOS or Windows if you have the media to do that.

If the laptop isn't brand new and it came with windows try this:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...name=c01867418

Look under "Recovery from the startup screen (during system boot)" almost halfway down.

I know you mentioned SUSE being on it but I'm not sure if you bought it new or not. If it's used that recovery partition may still be there where you can put windows on it easily.

No windows was supposed to come with this new HP probook laptop. Judging from your posts it looks like its a surprise for you that some laptops are supposed to come with DOS only, some laptops are supposed to come with linux and some with windows. Even the same model laptops, such as this probook - you can buy it originally with windows, originally with linux and originaly with nothing (DOS). This particular one was supposed to come with linux.

Well if that windows format not working then you could get a linux rescue or live cd which have partition format tool so you can easily prepare it.

My next idea is to install some partition program (partition magic etc) and try to remove partitions in hopes that this would remove that linux parasite and leave me with good old DOS from where I could start installing windows.

Ah, okay. Most people have something with Windows on it that's why I said that. I only use Linux myself. Just use "dirve options (advanced)" then where you see that screenshot and delete the partitions and then create a new one to install windows.

You can also "show details" at that screen where it tells you that you cannot install windows there and that will say why.

You sorta need to know what you are doing though. Form reading this:

http://windowssecrets.com/forums/sho...ling-Windows-7

After hitting "drive options (andvanced)

you will get other options.

Choose "delete" and delete all the partitions if you want to do that. (warning: this will wipe the data)

Then choose new to create a new partition for the new install. Then format the new partition.

It should be good to go on the windows install now. OR stop after deleting and install DOS.

Login as LINUX root and delete the system and reboot with a Windows CD if you don't have a CD use a use a USB portable CD

Linux fdisc

Or run a new Windows install from a CD and choose to reformat all the partitions into one NTFS partition there is a easy to use setup screen when you run the Windows CD its self contained cancer will take over ... How's RT doing Balmer?
