Make a new user for yourself after you login as root
Add that username to your sudo then logout with root and login with the new user name you made -- do not operate as the root user on the Internet unless you have no choice.
Now, you can make changes in sudo or; type $su root and enter the password
if you want greater security (not adding the new user to the sudo config file) then $su username to go back to that user account.
I do this with Debian distros but should be the same or similar in SUSE.
