Do you have a security system at your house?

Was thinking of getting one installed. Been a few problems around the area recently and would better feel safe then sorry. Doubtful it will make it up my way, but dont want to look back and think "shit!"

Ideally Id like something that gives me a notification on my phone when something happens, but that seems to come with a pretty hefty price tag. A company called Life Shield does this and is a bit less than ADT but ive never heard of them before.

DVR systems that send a screenshot to an email address are cheap. I have one and it cost me $100.

Camera costs another $100.

Locksmiths and locks provide advanced ways to lock doors to keep people out of a room.

I bought a few cameras before when I lived in LA and have a webcam type setup... just never got around to getting installed at my house now.

only thing is if someone were to break in through window or door, I want some lights, sirens, streamers, ballons, etc.

The previous owner of my house was a little nuts, she had motion sensors, window shattering protection, fire and flood warnings and they all link up to a central monitoring station and even if the phone line is cut, it uses the internet as a backup. Its pretty slick and only costs $20/mn for the monitoring. The installation I was told was about $1-2k. Its the physchological effect of getting robbed that's more of an impact than the actual stuff stolen so its worth it for $20/mn. Plus your insurance bill will drop by usually the same amount of the monthly monitoring so its really just a one time investment.

that system sounds nice, any details? Brand/features?

I have a couple IP cameras that email me when motion is detected, they also store video to one of my servers. It's a linksys cam, and I've been happy with it for a while now.

Came with the house so I have no idea really. But if you get any type of security system that makes a call to a fully monitored center, you generally will get the monthly fees back in savings off your home insurance. So its worth it and really brings peace of mind.

I have something similar. I don't have a phone line to the house - brand new house and I never had one installed - but it uses a cellular system to call their monitoring system. I've also installed secondary dead bolts on the doors, and also a kill switch to the garage door openers.

It does save me on my homeowners insurance.

The only downside is the glass sensor. We have a dozen of them throughout the house, and even with the alarm off if we break a glass cup or have a loud bang like a gun shot, it sets them off.

Several.

Thinking of adding an 'in the perimeter' shooting device ala RoboCop. Someone's animal shit on my driveway, and if it was left a bloody lump of swiss cheese, I'd feel better about it.

Why? Thieves dont use a door opener to get in your garage. They use a coat hanger and it takes 6 seconds if they are slow.

Putting my speakers past 25 also sets them off, but I usually don't hear the alarm because of the music

Quite a bit harder if there are no windows in the garage.

I got robbed last year too, mostly because of my own laziness, so now I keep my garage door padlocked on the inside too. A major pain in the ass for me, but at least it's something to slow them down a little bit.

Active home monitoring system. Slomins Shield. ... Keychain "beeper" just like for the car to arm and un-arm the house.

Motion sensors on ground floor and 1st floor ... each window has a sensor for glass.

Anything happens - Slomins calls my cell . no answer. Cops are here and I live 1min if that from the local police station.

$25 a month and I saved a lot on my homeowners. def worth the coin.

a lot of companies charge an arm and a leg for their stuff, so I'm thinking going with a basic type system through a company, like door alarms, window sensors and a motion detector (only activate that when I leave). I'm thinking of adding one on the garage door too, especially after seeing that video above

I have a series of cameras with night vision that I bought from Frys a few years back that will send me an email if they sense movement, I can rig that up to send me a "email" text message.

Also, I have flood lights around the house and ordered motion sensors for them yesterday. I saw someone before who hooked up strobe lights on a motion sensor that was placed 5' off the ground on the front and back of his house with garage door closing sensors.

When I first moved in, I ordered a motion sensor online to put around the back of my house. It backs up to woods and its pretty dark all around, but the company was out of stock and refunded my money... never replied to any emails after that so I guess they went out of business.

Most of the stuff you can do yourself, but some insurance companies (like mine) will only give discounts if it is a professionally installed alarm system

"Do you have a security system at your house?"

Yes but damned if I will tell you what it is or how it works except that it may or may not include a properly registered fully automatic waepon.

Your high level of mental instability is the only security system needed at your place. Trust me nobody wants to break in there.
