How did your mom 'cure' illness as a kid?

No matter was wrong with me, my mother thought that saltine crackers and ginger ale was the the cure. Unless it was a physical injury and then we had to soak whatever body part was hurt is epsom salt.

What remedies did your mother pull out when illness struck?

My mom left me home alone from morning til night when I had chicken pox, was about 10 or so I think. And get this... she couldn't pay the bills so I had no running water in the house.. toilet was backed up and I was dehydrated as hell when she finally got home from work. The next day was the same.

But I'm not bitter

Yeah, I guess the theory was that they are so bland you wouldn't throw them up. Jello was sometimes used as a half way point when I was really little. I think that was so that if I puked up it was in chunks because otherwise I made the Exorcist kid look amateur.

You can't get saltines in the UK (by that name at least..maybe I am missing them) or I would probably habit buy them whenever I am ill.

Saltines were the food of choice if you were throwing up. Ginger ale for motion sickness (since it works), and chicken soup for everything. We also chewed bayer baby aspirin at the first sign of anything.
My grandmother would always have some "black salve" on hand for things like splinters, or deep infections. Whatever the hell it was, it would draw out anything to the surface of the skin. I know she made it herself, but no clue what was in it. One of my brothers once got a super long nasty thorn in his foot while we were visiting there. She put that salve on the area and by morning the thorn had come right out and he didnt even feel it.

When I had chicken pox I was sent to stay with my grandparents and ended up giving my granddad shingles

No, we have Ritz in the states. I think the nearest you will get here are cream crackers but they aren't exactly the same. Cream crackers are thicker and don't have the light salting.

haha too funny. My mom was the same. flat ginger ale for rehydrating (no bubbles because they can aggravate a cough), crackers or buttered toast for eating, chicken soup for slurping. Vicks on the chest at night with a humidifier in my room full-tilt. I seemed to recover from everything fairly decently!

My mom never had many odd remedies, but she did like the vick vapor rub if I had any kind of chest cold.

A friend of mine had a grandma who would give any sick child in the family an enema. She felt that flushing all of that crap (literally) out of your system would help. he said you never went to her house if you had even a hit of illness because you would end up with a hose in your ass.

Yeah, ginger ale and crackers here too... soft-boiled eggs too, for some reason. The Vick's came out with chest colds. Ugh.

Still can't drink ginger ale to this day.

Honey and lemon.

I just put one of my kids down for the night and she asked for it, while faking a cough.

15 minutes later, she's fast asleep.

Tuc is not a saltine
Tucs are very nice thought. Especially the cheese ones.

Should be near all the other crackers (context!).

I just did a search for you and found these locations in London:

http://local.trueknowledge.com/salti...nited_kingdom/

Also, brandname: Doriano from Tesco.
There should also be a a few Costco's in London. They should have saltines as well

no sympathy...it breeds weakness

If I can move my toes and fingers then I could walk it off.

The only time I couldn't "walk it off" is when I had internal bleeding. That is when my mom took me took the hospital because she knew shit was serious.

You can still function and do physical activity if you have a fever, headache, stomach ache...it is just all in your head.

I'll argue that you have never experienced a really bad fever then. No way in hell you'll do anything but lie in bed being delirious.
