Bandwitdth Quaestion!
Hello all! Just a quick question here regarding bandwidth usage etc. I'm going to be setting up a single page affiliate site.
I am new to this, so I'm going to post my thoughts on how it works, please correct me if I'm wrong. Once I have sponsors I get links to their "free" galleries that are hosted on their own servers. I then select images from that to display on my page most likley making them clickable thumbnails. So I'll basically only be hosting the html pages and a bunch of thumbnails unless I have my own content to put on there. Am I right in this? Which means bandwidth usage would only be from my page to the sponsor site, and the galleries being on the sponsor site would be using theirs.? If I am right in this could someone tell me what a good starter package would be or an estimated u/d would be for this type of site? If I'm wrong could someone please correct me and also give an estimated u/d? Thanks in advance guys! |

I assume you are talking about setting up a TGP...
Then yes, you are hosting your html and your thumbs, not the actual galleries. The amount of bandwidth needed depends largely upon the amount and size of thumbs that you will have. Given today's stupid amount of free content, a rough rule of thumb would be to use 1 meg per page load so roughtly 1 gig per 1000 page views. A new skimming TGP SHOULD be able to get to 5k visitors very quickly, If not, the TGP game isn't for you. Anyhow, you should pick a host that will allow you to grow as you need to. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. |

Thanks for the quick responses. Very informative. I am referring to a TGP site, so my assumptions were correct. I'm actually going to be hosting it on a friends server, but would like to know what to expect as far as bandwidth usage. I don't want to put something on there that will effect the other servers, nor do I want it on a server without enough bandwidth. I guess it should be just fine for now then. Hopefully grow soon.
