what if google...?

the recent article on ice.com being a company that spends a million dollars on google adwords advertising made me wonder about search engine rankings and the ramifications it has on traffic etc

I googled the word 'ice', expecting to find a bunch of pages on frozen water etc etc, but lo and behold, ice.com is right at the very top..... maybe they are extremely optimized and all the right links pushed them so high (it is a jewelry company, by the way, and seems to have nothing to do with ice other than the name which maybe shows up twice on the front page)

so it got me wondering, is google slanting the seo optimization game heavily in favor of those that are spending big $$ on advertising with them, and could this get even more pervasive in the near or distant future to where nearly overnight the whole seo optimization and many websites' business model could become obsolete? What if someday soon google subtly decided to make it so the top 10 pages of results for many keywords were populated with companies with 7 figure advertising budgets?

I may be completely wrong and missing something here, so anyone that can comment or correct my understanding please do.

one word, ice has an excellent net marketing team. most SEO companies do use adwords and other PPC's to certain extend. If you are purely depending on SEO you going to be in lot of trouble.

I doub't google will take a gamble like that. But I am sure there are some special treatments for those with deep pockets.

Hi jetjet

I had many number one spots within Google just by doing some basic Search Engine Optimization. At anytime I can get within the top 20 of Google; and If I can do this by following Google's requirements then anyone who takes the time to educate themselves could do the very same.

Most of the time people who use SEO services get a temporary high rank within Google and think that it is the only way as to get a good rank so they keep paying big $$$ instead of learning how-to do it themselves. Now when webmasters who are paying the big bucks stop paying the SEO companies for their service they find within a few weeks to a few months that their position drops way down. I'm sure you can verify this easily for yourself.

You have pointed out a website ice.com; saying that Google Adwords give special treatment to companies who spend big $$$... however from my experience this is not true. If this company or any other company wanted to pay for a sponsor position within google they would not have to worry about keywords etc... and would have no reason to try to get good ranks through 3rd party companies...

Don't take my word; check it out for yourself.

Later,

Don't forget that Google is a company looking for profit, not a foundation.
As you can do anything you want in your store, they also can do anything in their store. Simple and clear. PROFIT - MONEY the unique rule in the market.

I definitely think money has to do with it. Shit if I didn't get placed on the top of the pages dropping that much of $$, then I'm doing business with the wrong people.

Yes, money. But is not a drama. A good SEO can help you. Is not expensive.
Besides a good linking campaing is very important. SE are stores but every one can get something. They can't survive with their rich clients only.
