how long have you been designing?

it seems you've got the basics down, but have many years of refining ahead of you.

On and off for about 2 years, but now I want to get into it properly.

I need all the help I can get.
I'm trying to teach myself php at the moment. It's difficult as I don't know any web designers personally.

pick up books on design theory before you dig into the technical side. being a successful webmaster means having both technical and aesthetic skills.

and pick up a book on php at your local library to prime yourself.

Will do. Regarding the djandyg.com site what don't you like about that?
I'll take on board any productive criticism.

Thanks

it's not bad, it's just plain. you can be simple and to the point, but have some style!

the page is just a string of text, which is the web circa 1997.

and i personally hate the main font up top. seems tacky.

I know it's very basic and it's the first site I made.
As I learn stuff I try and apply it to that site, but I don't get given that much content off my mate anymore as he's always off travelling.

If you were asked to redesign it what would you do?

Can you give me some pointers?

the best pointer is for you to surf other websites and see what works, and what doesn't.

look inside and let the site design itself, rather than force the site to fit another style or technical limitation you have.

bust out your notebook and start drawing lines and grids. place content in interesting areas. think about eyeflow. bring in meaningful graphics and images. always consider composition. study color theory.

make it an experience, not a chore.

I don't mean to sound like an asshole, but you need to step up your game quite a bit if your thinking about making a living doing design and development.

I would suggest searching Google for some free PhotoShop tutorial websites. They are all over the place. I found them to be very helpful back when I was learning how to design.

As far as development goes www.w3schools.com has some good programming tutorials. For php I read a few books, but in the end www.php.net was all I ever needed.

Happy Learning

Thanks for the advise. I'm keen to learn so will try and step things up.

To run a successful site I don't need to know everything myself. Just what needs to be done and who can do it for me.

But your right I have a lot to learn and slowly but surely I'll get there.

Thanks again!
