Active GIF in generated thumbnail

Hi,

does anyone know if it's possible to keep a GIF playable when generating a thumbnail through PHP? Basically cropping a gif without losing the animation.

Not quite, but very close. My current system crops the image from the users upload into a square and uses that as the gallery thumbnail. I am hoping to find a way to make it into a square from the users gif upload. It may be that it's simply not possible without writing an extremely intricate app.

Thank you though!
