Google AdWords change in policy regarding adult sites

Just got this email from Google AdWords:

Dear AdWords Advertiser,

We're writing to remind you about a change to Google's advertising policies we announced in our Policy Change Log that may affect your AdWords account: https://support.google.com/adwordspolicy/answer/4271759

Beginning in the coming weeks, we'll no longer accept ads that promote graphic depictions of sexual acts including, but not limited to, hardcore pornography; graphic sexual acts including sex acts such as masturbation; genital, anal, and oral sexual activity.

When we make this change, Google will disapprove all ads and sites that are identified as being in violation of our revised policy. Our system identified your account as potentially affected by this policy change. We ask that you make any necessary changes to your ads and sites to comply so that your campaigns can continue to run.

Sincerely,
The Google AdWords Team

We used adwords until they became too expensive, but it is a worrying trend the growth of censorship.

Monopolistic cunts. Google is anti porn so basically pro rape and pro cheating. Pro cheating = anti family

Google basically hates women because it's a bunch of manifesto writing nerds

And no I don't use google adwords

Anyone want to take a guess at what they will consider "hardcore pornography"?

So no graphic sexual acts or activity, so does that just leave sites that show nudity without models touching themselves or another?!

Probably based more on the videos and photos on any site vs the type of site, so if you have any product photos or videos of whatever they consider hardcore porn, masturbation, or genital, anal or oral sexual activity, then it probably would but I would think most products on toy shops have relatively safe images.

yeah, just trying to determine what to delete before then so I don't rack up a lot of automated disapprovals as there is a limit to how many disapprovals you can get in an account for some types of disapprovals. It is just such a vague term, oh well.

So I guess a good question is how much time we got? On their site they say: "...will be updated in late June 2014 to reflect a new policy on sexually explicit content. Under this policy, sexually explicit content will be prohibited, and guidelines will be clarified regarding promotion of other adult content."

I just hope they will leave advertisers a few weeks to adapt before enforcing their new policy.

It just doesn't make sense. People searching for porn on GG will still get links to hardcore so why not keep monetize on this via adwords?!?! Unless some panda update will later come with a big surprise?

I think it was significant that they banned porn monetization on Blogspot, but not porn itself.

Was only a matter of time before they rolled that out elsewhere.

Owh well... I just changed my company policy too... It means that if they don't want me to use their service in the future they also didn't want me to use it in the past and i'll simply just retransfer all automatic payments to google adwords from last 6months....

If it's just limited to sex toys, it's probably ok, but if dvds are also included, then no.

The first link that shows with Bing under Related Topics is "Dog Sex" and it's not doggy style or dogging.

I also wouldn't be surprised if Bing et al follow Google down the morality highway in the near future.

Wow that will cost them a couple million a month.

The question is who will do adwords for hardcore sites? I see a market opening.

I just got off the phone with them. Changing your landers to non-nude won't help. Once the domain is associated with adult it's toast. I asked if we could just buy a new domain and run non-nude landers and he couldn't answer me, just told me to be careful. Whatever that means.

Thanks, even non nude, that is strange, I mean if that is the case, why would they specify "hardcore pornography" in the email instead of just pornography if they are gonna disapprove all adult sites.

And why would the email suggest to update sites if the domains are toast?

Hm had a phone call here today too and they claimed a non nude lander completely non sugestive on the same domain would be ok.

Some testing to do I guess.

Roals, so they said a non suggestive lander without explicit on the page itself is ok, but linking from this lander to a more explicit site or page is no problem?

Ok, be careful of those DVD box covers that contain the word teen as I know in the past they have disapproved ads for that even with 2257 notices.

Thing is, Google's mid to long-term plan is not to "be the best search engine and web portal" - it's far far beyond that. If the average person were privy to how all their properties (both directly owned and indirect affiliations) make money and how they plan to develop them, people would be very surprised. And quite possibly very frightened.

This is just them cleaning up a dirty little corner of the net, in their view. It's a minor chore and much overdue from their perspective. And morality aside I have to think things would be different if our industry didn't have a rep for being so utterly spammy and shady, at least in the online realm.

They did not say that and we just link to the join from it to be safe.

Yes good point might swap them out for others to be more sure.

In the end it will come down to testing what can and can't be done.

Np just don't take it for granted, this was a Dutch Google employee. A US one might look at it differently. So again it comes down to testing what they allow and what not.
