$55 bought me 10 vps servers

I spent just $55 and got 10 vps servers from various companies, I wanted to test out how these companies operate, and how well the cms they use to manage them did.

If you are a web developer and dont really need any traffic I think vps is the way to go if you want root access and experience linux or any unix flavoured os, instead of paying for shared hosting and not having full control.

Out of the 10 I bought, only 2 really I liked.

1. linode, for their backend and ease of use to install os, etc.
2. fdcservers for giving 5 ip addresses and 5mbps unmetered.

In the past I normally dont go with fdc cause of the history, but buying a vps just for non mission critial stuff, just for testing, I would do it time and time again.

Here are the run down of each specs of each company I bought.

Quote:
linode $19.99

512mb ram
20gb hd
200gb transfer
1 ip address
1 cpu core

----

fdcservers.net $9

384mb ram
50gb hd
5mbps unmeteered bandwidth
5 ip addresses
1 cpu core

----

ipxcore.com $1.75

160mb ram
5gb hd
50gb bandwidth
1 ip address
1 cpu core

-----

bhost.net $3.16

256mb ram
10gb hd
250gb bandwidth
1 ip address
2 cpu cores

------

vpscheap.net $1.99

128mb ram
10gb hd
10mbps unmetered bandwidth
1 ip address
2 cpu cores

------

vpsfx $2.95

128mb ram
50gb hd
1000gb bandwidth
1 ip address
1 cpu core

------

buyvm $3.50

256mb ram
30gb hd
1000gb bandwidth
1 ip address
2 cpu cores

------

alienvps.com $5

256mb ram
25 gb hd
250gb bandwidth
1 ip address
1 cpu core

------

prgmr.com $6

128mb ram
3gb hd
20gb bandwidth
1 ip address
1 cpu core

----

minivps $1.50

96mb ram
5gb hd
100gb bandwidth
1 ip address
1 cpu core

-----
note: I dont suggest using this for any real traffic hosting, i would only recommend this for people looking to setup a development environment with as little cash as possible.

Hope this helps you guys ;)

I use Linode and Amerinoc for my vps.

AlienVPS is a pain in the ass to deal with.

Nice!

Now, you let me oneof my sites with pr to each server, and we start a SEO link building service.

We make lots of moneyselling links with pr and diff IPs. We'll be rich!

Which OS(s) were you running on the VPSs? I've looked into this a bit, seem to remember something about many cheap VPS providers using a cheaper solution which can only virtualise Linux, rather than being able to boot any OS.

I had a quick look and the majority only support Linux. Looks like Xen is needed for full "any OS" virtualisation.

What would a good solution be for setting up wpmu hosts - something cheap and that can handle say 5000 low traffic blogs each?

I love my Linode VPS, it's great to be able to wipe and re-install any [linux] OS instantly... I use it to test a setup, then roll it out to a dedicated server elsewhere once traffic comes in.

The problem with me was it just didn't scale well for the price. Even with a Linode 1536 (plus their backup solution, I was paying like $75 a month) the benchmarks I was getting were about 10% of the same benchmark results I got with a $99 dedicated box.

10%! Fris is right, dev only, or for learning.

VPS is just a cloud based shared account that requires more stress on the server.

Why even be so excited over having root access in exchange for performance?

Just curious why people get so excited over VPS when it's just slower and less reliable than a quality shared server.

My shared host is not going to allow:

VPN server,
Game server,
Email server,
Program testing
VOIP servers
Linux or bsd playing,

and much more.

Shared hosting works fine for all of my blogs, but some websites I own that host video and get a good amount of traffic would not work for a shared host...not to mention I can control what's installed (ffmpeg and other things).

It's a step up from shared hosting, an intermediate offering that fills a niche for many who want more control, but are not ready to pay for a dedicated server.

Having said that, some hosts offer bargain basement used servers for as little as $20-25 a month. Performance will probably be better, or at least more consistent, than a VPS, but that advantage must be balanced against the higher risk of hardware failure.

this post is for development only, not for any big hosting with high traffic, i only recommend this if you want to setup a development environment for test sites.

i wouldnt use a vps for any high traffic stuff, i stick to dedicated for that.

There's ONE VPS place I wouldn't recommend, don't wanna name names...but Chicago comes to mind.
They damn can't send out a freaking invoice, even with an automated system, even though I told them repeatedly that I wasn't ever getting them.
Definitely NOT customer service friendly!

https://robot.your-server.de/order/market

Servers starting from 19 euros

Warning: this is used hardware (the one I just ordered is about 5-6 years old) and I don't think they allow adult content. But for a cheap development and testing environment, it may be more "real world" than a VPS.

I think that is the myth we have a couple VPS accounts ans shared accounts with what people say are the top companies and the VPS account are all horrible, they are slow, and crash time to time, and have more issues.

I look at it like this, why get a clutch on a Honda Civic when you can get a Porsche with an automatic. I definably would take the Porsche. Of course there is a lot of these that look like a Porsche but run like a Civic so you have text them out a little first.

Yes, it's Hetzner; they don't.

As others have said, a VPS is okay for trying out things or using software other than web servers, which any cheapo shared host provides. But if you have an old/unused laptop or PC lying around, why even waste money on a cheap VPS.

Hi Fris,

I'm just academically curious, do you know how FDC is managing the 5 megabit unmetered? I would guess that is VLAN rate limiting but I'm curious if they have defined how they are measuring and enforcing that. Also, what do you like best about Linode? Thanks!

Brad
not sure, i used to be with fdc way back in the day, the time when cogent actually cut them off, so my box was down for 1+ week. so im no stranger to FDC.

I only bought the vps cause it was the best deal, and i found no other vps offering more than 1 ip, with fdc its 5 ips.

All their packages is unlimited bandwidth.

when i did have a dedicated with them, the speeds were good, i did loads of bandwidth, in the 100's of tb's but the uptime was pretty bad, i wouldnt suggest *ANYONE* goto fdc for anything critial.

the thing that is best about linode is the control panel, able to install os', and lots of other things, better than any other service, but if you wanted to get any serious bandwidth with them you be paying out the ass.

As I said, im only using vps for development on linux, cause i run fbsd, and I like to test my shell scripts and other stuff on linux as well, cause fbsd isnt the same in all aspects.

And to answer the question earlier, about installing it locally. I do have ubuntu, plus other linux installed, but i prefer a server i can connect to, its not the same as vmware ;)
