The pilot was forced to bring the Boeing 767 in to land at Warsaw airport with no wheels after all its landing gear failed.

While the plane circled the Polish capital for an hour, dumping excess fuel and repeatedly trying to solve the problem, ground crews prepared for a crash landing, closing the airport to all other flights and clearing nearby streets.

That's a lot smoother than my few landings WITH wheels.

is it even possible for planes to dump fuel? I always thought that was a myth...

secondly, why the hell aren't there secondary options for planes wheels? would it not be worth the money considering a landing like this ruins your plane forever...

If I'm not mistaken, I believe they just circle the airport consuming fuel as I don't think they have fuel dump systems on modern airliners, besides, I would think you would want all the time you could to get the landing gear working again, if at all possible. Also, I dont think that environmentalists wouldn't be kosher with a fuel dump.

Fuel dumping is real but not all airplanes are equipped to dump fuel. The A380 that had a catastrophic engine failure leaving Singapore last year had to dump fuel. Different A380, but here is a video from on board of a plane dumping fuel:

I'm surprised, but given the risk to life, I guess that trumps all. I wonder how an environmentalist would feel on a plane that was dumping fuel.. hehe

A friend of mine was a pilot in the Sudan and had a contract to fly UN officials around. He had to belly land once and said it was actually a very smooth landing.

He had a guy from the UN with him whom said "that wasn't bad for a crash landing".

He said other than the prop being damaged from the ground strike, the under belly of the plane wasn't badly damaged. (was dirt run way)

Anyway they say and he confirmed it, that belly landings aren't that rough.. Granted with a large passenger jet might be a bit more interesting.

fuel dumping systems are mandatory on some planes depending on a ratio between their max take-off weight and max landing weight. 767's depending on purchase configuration and/or manufacturer might have dumping systems.

because when you drive you in control and even if you get into accident you'll be fine (90% of the time), with flying you trust your life to a few guys and if let's say engine dies you're a goner vs car will just stop....

dirt run way is different than asphalt run way in this case of no wheels landing
