Wrong - they penalize shitty exact match domains (i.e. hyphenated 4-word monstrosities) or exact matches housing shitty sites. Most webmasters complaining their EMD got hit had thin sites or were overly optimizing on the term making it obvious they were trying to game Google. If Google penalized EMDs, CreditCards.com would give way to Visa, Mastercard, Amex and the plethora of banks that issue credit cards as all of those are much larger companies with bigger authority.

Good to know. I thought it was a generalized penalty for long hyphenated domains, and just a 'no value' point for smaller domain names so it'd level the playing field.
