This is a letter from a bittorrent pirate who contacted our attorney even before we contacted him.

I am a fan of this punishment as well. The real goal here is to set an example and slow the occurrence of pirating down. Effectively, that's already been done so everything else is just reinforcement.

I would probably opt for more like 5 years... that's still nothin... and give him the five years like jdoughs said...

It'll show you're not an asshole and you're completely willing to work with people, you're just trying to protect your own property :)

The only drawback to making him pay for a years membership is that it is not much of a deterrent. Does not really send much of a message to others. :2 cents:

And there you have it. Suing these people can produce some great results. He will pay a fine and then start using PornHub for all of his stolen porn needs.

...oh and I said that about PornHub because if he didn't know torrents were bad he must not understand how illegal tubes work.

Glad to see that the media coverage is having a positive effect on this and maybe it will continue to educate more people.

Agreed. At least he came up front and admitted his mistakes. Many people fail to be able to do that. I'd cut him some slack and just make him pay for his year or 2 membership.

If you doing this to make money off of these guys then great. But I hope you don't think you will be changing the minds of many people. I'd bet he is 1 in 1,000 that would feel that way.

Seems like if these people were smart they would just go to tube sites where you wont touch them. Not to mention I don't understand the whole download files from people you don't know off of a torrent site, it just seems to beg for viruses.

$1900? is that for people who downloaded it from a torrent site or people who were sharing it with others ?

Let him share your members area... lease it to him, give him a content license. Make him pay. $1900 is cheap, then they steal your content anyway.

There may be a market for assisting people to write this kind of stuff though. :>

Perhaps consider reducing it to $500 under the condition that they agree to post their story on three major forums each month for a year minus personal information. They have to submit the message to you for approval along with the forums they will be posting on. they will need to submit proof of posting each month. Have the message end "DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU!"
