San Francisco, California (CNN) -- Police are bracing for riots in Oakland, California as a verdict nears in a racially-charged murder trial of a white former police officer accused of killing an unarmed black man. On the Oakland Police Department website there are messages from the police chief and Oakland's mayor warning people to stay calm. Closing arguments are scheduled to conclude Friday in the murder trial of former Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer Johannes Mehserle, said CNN affiliate KTVU reported.

The jury could begin deliberating late Friday. Mehserle could be found not guilty, guilty of murder or guilty of a lesser offense like manslaughter. Mehserle is accused of fatally shooting an unarmed man on a California train platform on New Year's Day last year. Mehserle, who is white, has pleaded not guilty to killing Oscar Grant III, a 22-year-old black man.

The shooting was captured on a bystander's cell-phone video camera, widely circulated on the Internet and on news broadcasts, and it spurred several protests and riots in and around Oakland. Mehserle resigned his position a few days after the incident and was later arrested in Nevada. Mehserle was released on a $3 million bond.

I'm a fan of the police, but it looks like unjustified homicide. The guy was on his stomach with 2 officers on him.

But, even though they may end up having a right to be angry depending on the verdict, black people don't have the right to lose their fucking minds and riot -- which they will.

Riots will prob happen no matter what the verdict is, don't you think? The size of the riots, will be more the question.

oaktown is my old turf.. my Mom is head court reporter (no jokes please!) at the oakland courthouse.. she manages 50+ other reporters so she has inside info on the case of course.

The brotha was on parole, priors, packin a gat, etc etc.. not to take away from an unnecessary death, but apparently the judge is being instructed to delay the ruling announcement until mon or tues.. no way do they want pandemonium over the holiday weekend if its gonna happen at all..

the cop might get involuntary manslaughter.. but if theres a hung jury bcuz a few of them disagree with each other, that could spark a riot.. same as a possible innocent verdict bcuz many think the cop was just doing his job.. mostly asian, white, hispanic jurors.

Im not black, but about 12 years ago, i was driving with a black friend of mine. A well built guy. We got pulled over in Redondo Beach at 1am (cops there are well known racists). My black friend tried to explain himself as we got surrounded by 2 squad cars and 4 cops, he was getting yelled at and we both got pulled out of the car, thrown on the ground. He got roughed up and cuffed before he could get his sentence out. He was getting screamed at and told that if he talks he will be beaten and shot. Was very disturbing. Then his gun got found in the car, then they found his sharifs badge in his wallet next to his gun.


The explanation we got was that my friend matched the description of a robbery suspect and they were very sorry for the dirty shirts and inconvenience. I was pissed, my friend was cool about it and let it go.

Im not black, but it would suck to get that because im black. And it happens more than white people think in certain areas.

It was just an accident. C'mon guys, he just accidentally aimed his gun at the guys skull and shot the guy in the head. Cops are always shooting people by accident.

If this was just a white guy and a black guy you would be right but you are leaving out the part that this was a white cop and an unarmed black man. The cop and unarmed man part is what makes people think it was racial motivated.
