XBOX 360 - Is it dead? Three red lights - reset everything - nothing :-((

I have tried the instructions I found on their support website - did not work. Anyone know what to do next? Buy a new one?

Also, do I lose all my save games now?

:disgust

HorseShit 03-05-2009 11:25 AM

It's dead. They are pieces of shit and it happens to everyone eventually, usually multiple times.

Call them and give them the serial # or whatever

You shouldn't lose any saved anything

Sosa 03-05-2009 11:30 AM

Hope it is under warranty for you if you choose to send it in. All your stored info etc is on the hard drive so you are fine there because you won't send that back in with the machine.

Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life 03-05-2009 11:33 AM

warrantee runs like 3 years now or something, they know the shit is gonna fall apart. at least they are willing to fix it up.

if you do a search, the order of the 3 red rings of death will form a code by which you can tell what exactly is wrong with your console.

OY 03-05-2009 11:33 AM

OK cool - so call support dept- Trying that now :)

Sexyblogger 03-05-2009 11:33 AM

SAVE GAMES dead :)

pocketkangaroo 03-05-2009 11:34 AM

Even if it's past warranty, if you bitch, they'll fix it for free. I got mine back in just over a week recently.

Voodoo 03-05-2009 11:35 AM

brand0n 03-05-2009 11:36 AM

if you bitch like a mother fucker they will fix it past warrenty

and yea, its cooked
commonly refered to as RROD

_Richard_ 03-05-2009 11:36 AM

heard they replace the three rings of death, i'm hoping anyway

Voodoo 03-05-2009 11:36 AM

Looks like the 3 red lights means it's overheating. Is the fan obstructed by anything? Anything stacked on top of it or behind it?

SiMpLe 03-05-2009 11:49 AM

Try the towel trick and btw I'm on my fucking 3rd xbox cuz of this shit GRRRRRR

SiMpLe 03-05-2009 11:50 AM

Ohh and Smiley just lost his to the 3 rings two days ago to sigh

candyflip 03-05-2009 11:50 AM

3 rings is the RROD.

If you're feeling frisky, you can fix it yourself with a soldering gun and some supplies from Radio Shack.

Towel trick is a temporary fix. It might work for a few hours or it might work indefinitely.

call 1-800-469-9269 and tell them you got the 3 red lights (red ring of death). They will get all your info, serial # of your xbox and sen you a box so you can send it in to get "fixed". They will send you back a working refurbished one. The standard warranty is 1 year, but for the 3 red lights it's 3 years.

Yngwie 03-05-2009 11:54 AM

ok, maybe I should have read the entire thread before posting.. Damn it! lol

Si 03-05-2009 11:55 AM

I fixed my console following do-it-yourself videos found on youtube. Works like a charm since then - and if you have any experience building your own PC (mounting CPU, applying thermal paste etc.), it's just as easy. I didn't even use the kit shown there, but some ordinary washers and screws.

That's the first of the series:

They just call it the red rings of death because it sounds more dramatic than "press reset a million times until you finally give up"

UniqueD 03-05-2009 12:10 PM

or buy an arcade from walmart, switch out yours and fucking return it.

Evil Chris 03-05-2009 12:11 PM

Oystein... get yourself a PS3!!!

Vicious_B 03-05-2009 12:17 PM

Be glad you got 3 red rings. My sons console got only one after a required update on XBox Live and they want $100 to fix it I have spent a better part of 2 weeks on the phone with these people and no matter how much I have bitched they keep saying it's $100 for repairs.

And before anyone blasts me, it's not the money, it's the principle.

OY 03-05-2009 12:43 PM

Will never get a PS3!

Might just buy a new one instead of hassling with replacement huh?

I cannot spend 2 weeks on phone with annoying tech people - I have enough annoying tech people in my staff to have to deal with others! LOL

fuzebox 03-05-2009 12:57 PM

Anyone have experience sending in a modded one for repairs? Mine had the lights once from overheating, made me wonder if I'd be fucked if I got the real RROD...

Good to know.........I've not had the rings of death yet, i thought it was something that only MS could fix and may have been related to failing CPU.

If its simply overheating and needs fresh paste, thats like a 10 min job :)

UniqueD 03-05-2009 01:07 PM

not only paste, didnt watch that video but i've followed other guides to fixing RROD with success. involves re-doing how the X clamps hold down the heat sinks. fixed a rrod this way nearly a year ago, still goin strong

tranza 03-05-2009 01:11 PM

Nice vids above!

collegeboobies 03-05-2009 01:13 PM

I had some "cooling fan" i bought with my xbox... with the fan hooked up the xbox gave red ring of death... take off the fan and it worked fine. i wasted $30 on that.

Phoenix 03-05-2009 01:13 PM

i sent mine back to them and they shipped me another...works great..you keep your harddrive so all your game data is there....xboxlive acct everything

digitaldivas 03-05-2009 01:17 PM

knocking on wood now to pray this never happens to mine :Oh crap

doridori 03-05-2009 01:21 PM

fuck xbox. ps3 niggas

WWC 03-05-2009 03:04 PM

This is the ring of death....you cant do anything about it and have to contact Microsoft and send them the box to fix it....

CyberAgeGary 03-05-2009 03:14 PM

It happened to me. Get on Craigslist, they will charge you $40 to come out and fix it.. Games will still be there.

Hope all is well Oystein..

Yes, besides getting rid of the old paste and applying a new one, it also involves getting rid of the original clamps and replacing them with screws and silicon washers for harder grip. The entire process on video I linked is well explained.

if by modded you mean modded internally than that voids any warranty that you may have had. Whether it be the 1 year standard warranty or the 3 years extended one for the rrod if you have a modded one where it required your 360 to be opened the warranties are gone.

Godsmack 03-05-2009 05:27 PM

lol, my xbox elite died yesterday.. waiting for the MS box to sent it it for repair..

3 red rings of death.. and its about 6 months old..

Redmanthatcould 03-05-2009 05:44 PM

My buddy let me know...it's the red ring of death. You first have to register the console here:

http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/nxe/default.aspx

Microsoft mails you a box with postage, you mail them the kit, and they send you back a replacement.

http://support.xbox.com/support/en/u...egory=hardware

Janak 03-05-2009 05:51 PM

It's completely fucked and your life is over.

strobi 03-05-2009 05:51 PM

Had my 360 for like 3 years and still going strong, touching wood!

Happened to me too. For three lights they extend the warrenty to 3 years.

The one I was working on had 2 lights and the warrenty was only for 1 years.

The console was 2 months past warrenty and they wanted $100 to fix it. I tried to get them to waive the fee for 15 minutes and finally hungup the phone.:disgust

fris 03-05-2009 05:55 PM

had my xbox 360 elite for almost a year now, no issues so far

ya, I build my own computers, but I have never tried to fix my xbox myself. I've had 2 get the RROD so far and I just sent the fucker in since I knew I would just get a working one back. Plus, I didn't want to take the chance fucking shit up more. haha

Strangely enough I just got an email sating that a working xbox has just been shipped to me. Yes, my 2nd 360 that had the rrod was recent. Sent it in a little over a week ago. When I get the "new" one back I will know 100% if they sent me a pre 2008 one or not. If they sent me a pre 2008 one they are morons because it will RROD again and I will just have to send it bac and they will have to, once again, send me a "new" on. lol

kenny 03-05-2009 06:01 PM

Does anybody know how to fix 2 red lights?

I'm not paying $100 to get that stupid thing fixed. I don't even play the fucker

After I dunno how many Xbox 360s in my household, we got smart and bought the warranty service that BestBuy offers.

My son's 10 day old Elite went RoD. Called the local BestBuy and they had a new one waiting at customer service for us. Brought in just the console itself.. no HD, cables, etc. They pulled the new console out of the box and swapped.

What's good.. the warranty stays... if it does it again with the new box... same swap.

Well, the instructions I was given was to remove HDD from console before sending it in. So I should not lose my save games, I presume...

That fucking cooling fan uses the same power as the console, which also means the console isnt getting all the juice that its expecting or required. those fans are pieces of shit
