SUMTER, South Carolina (AP) -- An ex-convict who said he thought he was being robbed gunned down a 12-year-old trick-or-treater, spraying nearly 30 rounds with an assault rifle from inside his home after hearing a knock on the door, police said Saturday.

Not to mention, no way he shot 30 rounds if it wasn't full automatic.

Trick or treating has waned quite a bit, since the late 1970s / early 1980s...

Back then, most every kid (excepting those for religious reasons) went out on Halloween, regardless of the day it fell on, and went door to door late into the evening.

These days, many less kids go out - those who do often go with adult supervision, and trick or treating is typically limited to just an hour or so on a few streets (sometimes with the kids being driven for part of it!) and/or even more restricted, such as trick or treating at the local mall.

My guess is that in a decade or so, trick or treating, like many other things, will mostly be done virtually on the internet.

Sorry show me WHERE in the 2nd Amendment a felon can not own a gun. Those laws are UNCONSTITUTIONAL. In fact laws preventing people from owning RPGs and tanks are also illegal because the 2nd Amendment says the right to bear ARMS shall NOT be infringed. Go read it. Any person showld be allowed to own any weapon of any kind including biological, chemical and nuclear weapons if you interpret the 2nd amendment to apply to individuals as the NRA does. I'm not sure which part of "SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED" is hard to grasp.

It doesn't say anything about owning a weapon of any kind. It it doesn't say YOU have the right to own a gun. Different Amendments say you have to honor the laws of the States and the rights of people, and it says you can have your rights taken away. And again, lets not forget owning a guy is fine, killing an innocent person which was not threatening you, again has nothing to do with the 2nd Amendment.

I'm not saying right now its horrible and we need to take to the streets shooting, but the reality is that one day It may reach that point. This is why the amendment exists. The whole idea of the local militias was to prevent the centralization of power and tyranny.

The emotional response to a tragedy can easily make people ignore the long term issues of the society as a whole. It's almost as if people are being trained to focus on instant gratification and their own feeling in any given moment.

When weapons are criminalized only criminals and governments have them. What happens when the criminals and the government are one in the same?

The the holocaust started in 1941... that was 59 years ago. Think about it for a minute. Its not some long distant past. In terms of human history that was yesterday.

Last time I checked Canada, Australia and the UK are pretty free. Combined they have about 40% of the popualtion if the US and have 2% the gun death rate. hmmmmmm. I'm a HUGE believer in statistics. The reason I brought up the holocaust was not because I thought guns would have prevented it. I brought up how recently it happened to illustrate the immaturity of our society and the danger citizens can still face from their loving big brother.
