The Bailout Bill Just Failed - Not Passed

Stock market is down 700 pts.

I don't think the voting is over yet. What happens if this thing doesn't pass? Don't they know it could be a lot worse trouble for them than paying some extra taxes?

On CNN and now MSNBC. They reported that time remaining to vote is over. One person was left to cast and that the vote is 226 to 207 with the bill not passing.

Its trouble for all, not just them and not just the US. Our economy is global and if the US fails most will follow very quickly,

Hypo Real Estate Holding AG (Germany)
Glitnir Bank (Iceland)
Fortis (Belgium)
Bradford & Bingley's (Britian)

All are in the process of being bailed out by their respective governments

John McCain is a Senator... they don't vote until Wed. and the vote probably won't happen.

stickyfingerz 09-29-2008 11:05 AM

My count is 94 nay for dems and 66 yea from repubs. That means that the dems are the ones that made the bill fail to me. Why couldn't the dems get on board with each other over it? They only needed a handful of votes.

GregE 09-29-2008 11:06 AM

If they had put something in that bill to help the poor slobs facing foreclosure, I'd then think it was a bad thing that it didn't pass.

But, they didn't :disgust

There's something not quite right about throwing regular people out onto the street while at the same time bailing out all the fat cats.

BradM 09-29-2008 11:06 AM

Thank god.... maybe there is salvation after all.

Antonio 09-29-2008 11:10 AM

voting's over! congrats to the winners

Politicians just listened to the voters for the first time in years. Maybe enough people slammed the phone lines and showed their disgust for this bloated pig of a bill.

Nader 09-29-2008 11:14 AM

How is it the Dems fault when 133 Republicans voted against it too?

seeric 09-29-2008 11:18 AM

why the fuck would anyone in their right mind want this thing to pass?

If they have a vested interest in some of the funds- directly or indirectly (lobbyists)

Oddly... the republicans just saved this country from a major ass raping.... for now.

because we can't have the financial pillars of our country collapse. Last time something like this happened a huge depression followed.

buzzy 09-29-2008 11:22 AM

dow is down around 1000 now i heard.

I know that I am a dumbass when it comes to financial things, but I can't see how a bailout will solve anything. It might ease things temporarily, but it's time we as a nation were bitch slapped when it comes to the economy. Some bandaid thing and we'll be business as usual within a year.

I don't want a depression anymore than anyone else, but somewhere, sometime, we have to be accountable for poor choices, both on the individual level and on a corporate one.

Because the dems totally had the ability to make it pass regardless of the republicans.

http://money.cnn.com/2008/09/29/news...ex.htm?cnn=yes

The measure needs 218 votes for passage. Democrats voted 141 to 94 in favor of the plan, while Republicans voted 65 to 133 against. That left the measure with 206 votes for and 227 against.

So if Dems would of voted another 30 for they could of easily passed it.

seeric 09-29-2008 11:23 AM

i would rather have the pillars collapse than have those fucking bastards that caused this line their pockets again. some of the things that were written into that bill are absolute bullshit.

the dollar was going to tank anyway, the damage was already done, the 700 billion would of just delayed the damage untill a later date but with much more impact. overall it is good the bill didnt get passed

can't they run it through again, but this time they can hold guns to heads of about 10 democrats and 10 republicans who voted "nay" in the first pass?

You nailed it. I feared if they passed this because it would send a strong signal that irresponsibility is okay. Not only will we lose our houses over corporate greed, but we will then PAY THEM for their mistakes.

So we lose our houses and whatever else we have left? WHAT THE FUCK WERE THEY THINKING?!
