Guns should be legal, but the penalties for misusing them should be very severe.

Such as armed robbery should be a death penalty offense.

what about all the accidental killings from guns from legitimate people? Doctors are now saying it's a HEALTH HAZARD if you own a gun - there are soo many accidential shootings. Look at the stats from the american medical association - not NRA propaganda.

If a country has very strict gun laws, most of the criminals don't carry them around.

folks - don't get me wrong, I'm all for hunting rifles and shotguns. I personally don't believe there is a need for the general public to own handguns or assault rifles.

it's like driving without a seatbelt. sure people who wear seatbelts will still die in car crashes - but nowhere near the same amount of people will die as if we didn't have or wear seatbelts. Yes a couple of people will die BECAUSE of the seatbelt too - but I'd rather loose 2 people with a seatbelt on than 100 without one on.

Not in Vancouver!! I'm white and sometimes I feel like a minority. I've been in English stores (not Chinese, English stores) and I was the only white guy there.

Toronto has lots of black people, Vancouver has alot of Chinese. Minorities don't cause the problems here, and Canada has alot of them.

I'd rather people died through personal choice than through mandatory laws - but hey - I've got my own mind, I'm over 21 so why should 'I' be allowed to choose what I want to do? Guns are in existence - therefore criminals will have them - I'd rather have a .22 rim fire in my pocket 'just in case' than get popped. It's all about education - I've been trained in firearms. Every single person who wants a firearm should be fully trained (at their own expense) in it's use and what happens with mis-use.

Violent crime goes down in states that allow its citizens to carry concealed weapons. Bad guys don't know who might be carrying so they tend to behave better.

Drugs are illegal, but if someone wants them, they will find a way to get them. It would be the same for guns. Then all the people who want to play by the rules can sit back like a bunch of suckers and let some crackhead decide their fate.

Yup, make sure everyone knows proper handling procedures, how to load & unload a gun, how to check & make sure the chamber is empty everytime they put their hands on it.

Proper use of the safety mechanisms, proper storage & cleaning.

These things should be taught to everyone wanting to buy a handgun or rifle ...period.

I remember a story about a surgeon who specialized in spinal cord injuries. He want to a medical conference in another country and toward the end voiced a complaint that the conference seemed ignore spinal injuries caused by trauma related to gunshot wounds. The other doctors stared at him blankly. One of them said, "I have never seen a gunshot wound." Most of the other doctors nodded in agreement.

What the pro-gun lobby has yet to explain is whether it is just the availability of guns which makes them a common weapon of choice here in the US, or is it just that Americans are particularly inept at handling guns, or is it the fact that crooks feel they need to be armed because they are likely to run into much more than a billy club or can of pepper spray?

One thing is for sure: Gunshot wounds and deaths are much more common in the US than in any other country which isn't in a wartime situation.

Why is that?
