The overwhelming majority of scientists believe GW is a reality. Only arrogant, ignorant humans could think we can pump millions of tons of shit into our atmosphere and it not have any effect.

I don't understand how there could be 'controversy' about global warming. Surely it's a simple matter of measuring the temperature at various points around the world for a couple of decades and then just reading the data?

I mean, is it getting warmer or not?

How difficult is it to work out?

IllTestYourGirls 03-29-2008 08:12 AM

Well people are also assuming that a warmer climate is a bad thing. The earth was warmer in the 1500s than now. The 'controversy' is if man is the greatest cause of it.

This isn't a knock on all right-wingers, but it does encompass a lot of them. They do as they're told. Of course the reason they fight talk about global warming is because the party gets a lot of money from big oil. The party tells their followers that it's fake, and they say "yes sir". Like the saying "democrats fall in love, republicans fall in line".

I still think it's ridiculous that we are turning science into a political issue. Regardless of whether you believe that carbon emissions is causing the warming, being "green" isn't a bad thing. Finding alternative fuels is great for the country and allows us not to have to rely on the Middle East. Less waste is great for our planet and helps the ecosystem stay alive. Heck, most of the green stuff that is available actually saves people money (light bulbs more efficient, etc).

Turning "being green" into some horrible thing is arguably one of the most retarded things I've ever seen. But there are sheep who do as they are told and will continue to do so.

DaddyHalbucks 03-29-2008 04:55 PM

I read an article last week that cited data from Russian scientists who said that the planet Earth actually cooled an average of 1.2 degrees in the last year. The theory is the sun has been less active recently.

Al Gore's "global warming" is the biggest fraud in recorded history.

That said, I do believe reducing pollutants is still a good idea.

I wish they'd stop using the term "global warming" and use the more correct "global climate change".. the naysayers all fixate on the "warming" part...

Wonderful cognitive dissonance.. Ignore reams of data from a larger group of scientists but trust the Russians who along with Canada are probably the two countries with the most to benefit from any warming in terms of turning uninhabitable siberian wastelands into productive farmland and to help protect their current position as the #3 oil producer. If you're going to argue pro climate change scientists are in it for the research dollars or whatever, you can't ignore that anti climate changers are just as tainted.
I'm not engaging in any debate here just having a laugh about the way people selectively choose data and prosecute the same argument.

It's a bad thing if it turns your continent to desert. All a matter of location. Unless predictions of rising carbonic acid in the oceans turn out to be realistic.

The point is not all scientists agree with Gore. Many highly regarded scientists disagree with the theory of global warming.

And the media tends to ignore the critics of global warming too.

This is the most worrisome aspect. Completely absurd. It's the inability to see that climate change is a seperate issue to all the stinking hippy treehugger movements of the last 50 years. And even then. Fuck climate change.. Everyone's crying about something that might affect us in 50 or 100 years time but ignoring peak oil which
A. will affect us much, much sooner and
B. Will kill three birds with one stone.. If we can develop clean technology NOW we don't have to worry about $300 barrel oil and the economic effects, kissing Saudi ass when we should be turning them into glass and global warming because there will be no emissions..

Unlike climate change EVERYONE agrees we're running out of oil, it's just a matter of time and whether you're a doomer or an optimist. Climate change is a sideshow.

But anyways.. if you're sensible you'll stop arguing on a message board and go an invest in oil exploration and services stocks and maybe a few hundred hectares of Canadian permafrost ;)

I do my best to make that distinction whenever I can as well. It is global climate change and everyone also agree's that it is not 100% the fault of man, however we do play a factor and we should reduce our factor as much as possible.

But not all scientists agree on ANY subject. There will always be a minority opposition to most any theory bar gravity. I mean how long were the pro-tabacco scientists publishing their findings for?
At the moment pro-climate changers have many more highly regarded scientists than the opposing team and science is one of the few areas where might does tend to equal right. Even though of course this isn't always and sometimes spectacularly not the case (stomach ulcers et al)
I'm a buck against the trend kinda guy historically, but sunspots and water vapour as a greenhouse gas, plus research grants as financial incentive just don't do it for me on this one based on the counter arguments.

Also i'll take issue with the ignoring of critics, I don't know about there.. but over here we have regular deniers in the media. Most of the broadsheets have at least one conservative columnist that writes about how much of a fraud it is and even the ABC which is left wing aired "The Great Global Warming Swindle".. the friction between the sides makes for good drama and the media knows that. I acknowledge that they are outnumbered by "pro" articles but thats only because numerically so are such a small group.. It's like comlaining about there being no black people on "Friends" when 1 in 10 Americans are black.. Odds are any given group of people that size are 100% white. (and a relief to not be forced to accept any "tokens")
That said, anti climate changers are a very vocal minority and I believe they punch above their weight and actually get more press than their numbers would normally deserve because of the drama/interest/political alignment/finance their stand wields.

That's the whole problem I have. If someone mentions that they'd love to buy an electric car or use solar panels on their house, they're called a hippie, treehugging, freak. The oil companies, lobbyists, and paid off Congressmen have turned "being green" into an insult. Kind of like how "progress" is now deemed an insult in politics.

It's fucked but I think thats quite an easy one to turn around though.. In a society as individualistic, enterprising and anti-getting scewed as the US, It wouldn't take much for an electric car and solar panels to been seen as fucking the oil companies, fighting the terrorists and being your own electricity company in one shebang.. seriously.. It would take a couple of months of propaganda in that direction and It would be unpatriotic not to have solar cells and give your money to the dirty arabs.
And frankly.. with the cost of electric cars and solar panels, no tree hugging hippy freak could get half way close to thinking of owning them.

heh, this probably sounds a bit harsh, I should have elaborated even though it's hopelessly off topic, that argument was being used at a time when hollywood types had gone beyond that and had starting giving their minorities disabilities so they'd be even more "inclusive" I think there were two blind african americans on two popular shows at the same time.. it was paternalistic and counter to what they were trying to achieve by removing any sense of normalcy. At least futuristic black presidents are positive and might not be needed for much longer.

Once people realize the Global Warming is not such a big deal and that the planet will deal with it like it has dealt with every other major climate issue, in 2.4 billon years when the sun has swallowed up everything up to Mars in the solar system, no one will give a fuck anymore.

You can't take 1 year of data and use that as "proof" that the global "warming" thing is a fraud... That's only what those that want to disprove or cast doubt on it do.. You have to look at the overall temperature/climate change over a much longer period of time..

Gore said that cow farts comprise the largest chunk of greenhouse gas emissions, topping all other contributors, cars included.

DrudgeReport does the same thing. They'll post a story about how cold it is, and right below it will be a link to a story on global warming or vice versa. It's the dumb redneck proof that global warming must be fake.

Global warming isn't a matter of the temp increasing 20 degrees. We are talking very small amounts over long periods of time that people won't even feel. However it will be enough for the polar ice caps to shrink and increase the global water level.

"If you think any of the preceding facts can falsify global warming, you're hopelessly naive. Nothing creates cognitive dissonance in the mind of a true believer. In 2005, a Canadian Greenpeace representative explained “global warming can mean colder, it can mean drier, it can mean wetter.” In other words, all weather variations are evidence for global warming. I can't make this stuff up."

Climate change is always happening.
