Don't be such a wuss. Airline security is better now than it ever has been. Go to Europe and have a nice trip.

I've flown many short 1-2 hour trips around the states but this would be like 8 hours over the atlantic and that makes me really nervous

Theo 09-22-2002 05:14 PM

nah,you shouldn't
there's nothing more safe than traveling with an airplane. Getting killed in airplane accident is like hitting twice the #1 of lotto. The trip is more than 8 hours from USA to Europe, but you can do plenty of things. Get a good book to start reading...this way you'll can forget you are traveling by plane for many hours.

Lexxx 09-22-2002 05:15 PM

Marcus consider cruises from Boston to Europe... I know Holland/America does good ones... but they are much costlier and longer... you gotta get over the fear.

I did Boston - Bermuda - Boston cruise this summer just cause I didn't want to fly - it was GREAT!

I dont think I could swing a cruise, and I can only take a week off from work, but thats a good idea for the future, I dont know they had those cruises.

Unrealistic Fears Dude... You are at much greater risk of dying on the way to the airport, then on the plane...

i dont have a prob with planes

its those f'n boats!!
i went on this deep sea fishing trip off the coast here in carolinas. 10 foot seas, we got all the way out there (2 hours) found out we couldnt fish cause it was so rough, had to go all the way back.

Half the boat puked their lungs out, ugh

BradShaw 09-22-2002 05:27 PM

Take some valium. Or row a boat.

phogirl69 09-22-2002 05:28 PM

AT least you're not scared of driving the freeway...

I have a major phobia of driving the freeways, I haven't been on one over a year. I don't mind if someone else drives, it's just that I can't drive on the freeway myself! It's too damn fast and I get scared when it curves a lot..... and I'm scared of getting in an accident too... I always take inside streets, and if that's not possible, than I just stay home :(

swedguy 09-22-2002 05:30 PM

Fly with Iceland Air to Copenhagen.
They got some cute ass stewardesses :winkwink:

Steve G 09-22-2002 05:33 PM

i fly to europe at least 2x a month
This is what i do:
i dont sleep the night before the flight so i just fall asleep on the plane
so even if something happens i wont even notice it :)

but again its pretty safe and i never worry about it

Unfed 09-22-2002 05:34 PM

let me tell you about one of the air turbulences i've had over atlantic... :Graucho

Hi,

I fly to our europe office quite a bit.

Always use United or American.

Portland to DC, Dc to vienna via Austrian Airlines.

I love Austrian Airlines, good services, movies and screens on every seat.

American is ok too, but transfers suck.

Portland to Dallas, Dallas to Zurich, Zurich to Vienna.

I always just watch 2 or so movies, sleep a little, eat a little, and by that time your almost there.

Not so bad if you don't smoke:)))

Mutt 09-22-2002 09:23 PM

I won't fly but it has nothing to do with fear of crashing. It's the claustrophobia. It hit me about 15 years ago. But I used to have to fly, and if somebody in the family dies, which has only happened once I had to fly so .............

Here's what you do if you really have to or want to make a long plane trip and you don't think you can. Booze might work but ya never know, your anxiety might be bigger than that.

Go to your doctor and plead your case. Xanax will knock you out if you take enough, or it will mellow you enough to get where you're going. If Xanax isn't good enough, go for some Klonipin, that should knock you out good. There's probably some new stuff around but i haven't been to the doc in about 5 years.

The problem with those drugs is Xanax is addictive and it's a bitch to get off of if u do get addicted. And the worst thing about Xanax is that if you use it long enough and it works there comes a point when it just stops working for many people, somehow your brain rewires itself so it won't work anymore and it creates something called 'rebound anxiety' and that's worse than the shit that started it all.

But if all you have is fear of flying and you're only flying once or twice a year, one of those drugs will do the job.

I love how people always razz others about their fears and/or phobias.

We all have one...and most people suffer from stage fright.
That is one I do not have, I can get up in front of any audience and talk my head off.

I suffer from anxiety disorder and have over the last 5 years developed phobias I have never had before but I face them on a daily basis.
You can call me pussy all day long but I know damn well I'm a helluva lot braver than most people here because of that fact.

How many people here can say they face a phobia or fear daily?

Not too many.

Regardless of how trivial you think others fears/phobias are they are just as valid as yours...because in the end they are all irrational.

So marcus...do like the one gentleman said...go talk to a doctor and explain your fears.

Pick up something from the benzodiazepam family..e.g. valium, xanax, klonopin etc.

Depending upon how such things affect you I suggest you take it about 15-20 minutes prior to boarding the plane.
If things like valium kick your ass pretty good then wait until you're getting onto the plane.

Take some relaxing (and I stress RELAXING) music with you and a portable cd player and some headphones...kick back and enjoy the ride.

Other than that there's not much else you can do...anxiety disorder brings upon this feeling of impending death for most sufferers and I have had to remind myself time and time again that if it's my time to go it doesn't matter if I'm sitting 30,000 feet in the air on a plane or taking a dump on my toilet.

:)

He said it for me, flying is the safest way.

Why are some Americans such pussies?

So many live in downtown area where they are more likely to get shot and would not think of moving, cos the all night deli's are good.

But one terrorist incident and they all disappear.

From what I've seen the US freeways look pretty wide. Keeping calm is 80% of it. The UK motorways are kind of narrow but not so bad. A few times I've seen assholes skim past at close to 100 (or more), then spotted them pulled over by an unmarked police car 5 minutes down the road. :1orglaugh

How about calling a few driving schools and see if they offer any kind of course? That phobia can be cured if you're willing to have your hair stand on end a few times. It'll be kind of like spending the day on the largest rides an amusement park... but better. :)

there's a shot you can take that'll do that, but you'll need someone to carry you on to the plane. i think it makes you violent, too. there's a series of promotional videos about it called "The A-Team" - check your local listings.

You could always swim across the atlantic ocean, if you are not afraid of sharks.

Trust me the time you spend in europe will be so exciting and amazing, that even if you die on the return trip, you'll have accomplished something.

Now if you eat it on the trip over there...well then your life was a waste.

as part of determining this, make sure to ask each of them how much fuel will be on the plane. go with the one with the most fuel. :2 cents:

For anxiety...buspar is the best way to go.

It got me out of that acute stage where I was in the emergency room 3-4 times a week thinking I was dying from one problem or another.

Well let me address a few issues here.

#1 as I stated in my first post on this thread everyone..including you has a phobia.

Are you challenging yourself daily in fighting that phobia?

No...I doubt it.

I can't speak for marcus and don't know exactly why he is afraid of flying but his fear while "irrational" or "unrealistic" is still valid as any fears or phobias you have.

#2 re: the terrorist comment...sorry but we pussy americans don't live in a world where bombings and planes running into buildings killing 3,000 + people in less than an hour occur on a regular basis and just accept this as something we should just forget about and go on living normally.

I'm also sorry some people in parts of the world see war on a daily basis, and live with this type of tragedy all their lives and have grown accustomed to it.

We have violence in this country but not in such a large scale as 3,000 people dying in a matter of minutes.

And also...it is us pussy americans that all these fanatics wish to kill. When we visit other countries regardless of where we are it is our heads that have price tags...it is our lives they wish to snuff out...and damn the innocent bystanders which will be the good people of whatever country we are stationed in, or visiting.

Uh, do not fly those small airlines where some random guy without much training is flying ;)

Besides, flying is safer than driving your car down the highway.

No, driving schools won't help, I already took driving lessons a long time ago when I was still in school! The only reason why I can't drive freeways is because I'm scared of ACCIDENTS and DYING... not the fear of driving itself. I heard of some people getting run over and having their body parts flying all over the place and getting ejected from the car. That is the only reason why I'm scared, and I'm scared of getting my face scarred and looking bad for the rest of my life!! I think I would rather die than be scarred for life :(

I don't mind driving on the fwy when it's rush hour, I love it's when it's slow.. but when it's fast I think there's a bigger chance of dying or getting in an accident I think... I'm just scared of accidents... Sometimes when I drive by a car wreck I get even more scared... I'm already traumatized if I have to go to the dentist or go to the doctor to get my blood taken, I think I would die if I broke any bones or had to have surgery or something. (Never had to go through neither)

I think I'm a big wuss and scared of pain too... You know A LOT of people die in car accidents... I always hear about fatal car accidents and it FREAKS me out!

GoLiaT 09-23-2002 01:27 PM

its dangerous to live, you might die you know
