I keep forgetting to lie about what I do...

...at non-porn parties and end up feeling about as welcome as the bubonic plague.

I hate trying to defend the shit stain that this industry has become in most people's minds. Does this happen to anyone else?

Deej 08-12-2007 12:14 AM

A little. Amazing how some people you think can handle it or accept it... dont...

Azlord 08-12-2007 12:15 AM

Yah, it's happened to me. It's never fun, and I always regret letting people know what I do.

tnmphoto 08-12-2007 12:17 AM

Fuck em. If they can't handle the truth, who cares.

Ayla_SquareTurtle 08-12-2007 12:21 AM

around here they would just be curious and ask you lots of questions.

A little story:

I was taking a screenwriting class and I decided I was tried of being vague about what I do. So I said to myself if he does the go around the room, the who are you what do you do thing I was going to tell the truth.
Sure as shit he says I would like everyone to introduce themselves, tell us what you do and what you would like to accomplish here.
So Im ready, the truth will set me free tonight. The first guy he picks to start is a older guy in glasses and a suit. The man says his name and he works for the Attorney General John Ashcroft. My balls went to my throat and when my turn came I said build websites.

Casa Nova 08-12-2007 12:34 AM

I tell whoever asks.. but there are certain people around me who have no idea and i just say internet marketing.

I did tell a certain person & have regretted it ever since the dumb whore always brings it up when shes drunk and wants to fight. She's one of those fat ugly chicks who is mad at the world for everything and somehow believes everyone has to put up with her bullshit.

Being a pornographer is like being pregnant....
There is no such thing as being a little bit pregnant.
So be the best you can be and be glorious in it.
No regrets entering my 35th year selling erotica.

You are so brave to be able to come forward in a place like this and admit a thing like that. Congrats!

Ok, I think the problem starts when your kid asks you to come in to his/her elementary school classroom and talk about what you do for a living.

Redrob 08-12-2007 01:46 AM

Tell them you keep America free so they won't have to live in a theocracy run by Pilgrims.

Gasper 08-12-2007 01:53 AM

internet marketing, website building, seo optimization .. you name it :)

Actually, you don't. You enjoy America's freedoms and don't have to live in a theocracy run by Pilgrims just like the kkk and everyone else who is on, or around the edge.

Daruma 08-12-2007 02:04 AM

Steve..

#1 - never lie about what you do - there is nothing to be ashamed of....

#2 - who the fuck cares what you do.. hold your head up high and keep on making $$$..

Daruma 08-12-2007 02:12 AM

1off 08-12-2007 02:49 AM

people's minds always seem to go to the same place if i mention my business. They always assume I'm "IN" porn and then once I explain the real job, they are almost underwhelmed by it:winkwink:

"Has become"??

Hasn't this industry always been a shit stain in most civilian's minds?

Steve, get yourself in the habit of saying you are the owner and CEO of an online network. No mention of sites, only that money is generated via web-based promotion. Give them enough geekspeak double talk and they'll get that clouded look on their face as they pretend to understand what you're saying, they'll smile and nod after which they will happily introduce you to their friends as "This is Steve, he's an internet guru"

:D

Matt_WildCash 08-12-2007 03:33 AM

Internet Porn = Child porn to half the damn idiot population that read newspapers.

Thats cause of all the endless news stories that say shit like
"2 men were arrested today for child porn, they were said to have 100's of child porn pictures on there computer. The porn site industry is a billion dollar a year business and John Ashcroft thinks we should protect our children from the porn industry's dirty business" (shit like this tieing them together)

You work in porn thats one thing you work in internet porn your a complete perv.

Well to many anyways.

Matt

I usually answer honestly to anyone who doesn't appear uber conservative, but sometime I just don't feel like fielding the questions that will follow :Oh crap

You guys don't seem to understand that for the most part, it IS internet marketing, it IS web designing, it IS web development and building websites. You're telling the truth when you say that!

Barefootsies 08-12-2007 08:03 AM

Nah. It used to from time to time a few years back.

Now I have it well rehearsed, so I do my web consulting, and marketing cover down pat.

samo 08-12-2007 08:37 AM

I started with porn sites in 1997, that gave me money to quit my lam ass day job. The porn image was not too good, so I said I make software when people ask me what I did. Some wanted to know what type of software, so I said search engine submition, shoping carts, Online commerce, photo software, and a bunch of other shit that I actualy used in the process of my adult business. Soon those people started asking me to make software for them so they can use in their own sites, and before I know it, I was actauly selling more software than porn. So now I own an IT company that buys software and resales it, and I still have a bunch a of porno sites, but I keep this to myself.

Telling others what you do and being proud of it is all fine and dandy until you add kids into the equation. Then you have to worry about word getting around to teachers or parents of kids that might play with your child. You tell them that you are in web design or internet marketing and they think you are a geek. You tell them that you are in adult entertainment or even add the word softcore to lessen the impact, and you open a whole new other can of worms. I've lived in the same house for 9 years and have never told anyone in my neighborhood. I've not ashamed of what I do, but I am protective of my kids and always thinking "Will what I say or reveal affect them?".

Gerco 08-12-2007 08:57 AM

Everyone I know personally knows what I do, I don't lie about it or try to hide it. It's what I do. I pays for my house, cars and food on the table. I'm not going to be ashamed of that. and the VERY few people that seem to have and issue with that can, well, Go fuck themselves.

Jace 08-12-2007 09:09 AM

I got so sick of people asking questions about the porn industry, so I just say I am in "web development and internet marketing"

Couldn't agree more, many people in my life know, but a large number of my daughter's friends families don't know to protect their quality of life, not mine...

Sadly, most parents wouldn't want their kid hanging out with the pornographer's daughter and that's not fair to them, even though its really probably safer because most pedos, go to church, coach soccer, or etc as cover...:upsidedow

corvette 08-12-2007 09:21 AM

nope, never happened to me

BlondeBecks 08-12-2007 09:23 AM

I hear you there Steve (and everybody else)........Last week in order to get back at me and extort my dad as part of his divorce settlement my Step-mother (Step-monster) decided to use my website and work in this industry to try and hurt us severly........She called CPS (Child Protective Services) and complainted. As a result I was investigated and if things had gone really badly I could have had mydaughter taken away. Fortunately, I live in "the valley" and attitudes are a bit more liberal here becuase it's so common. People here may not approve of it, but they have learned to live with it anmd almost accept it. It's almost as if when you are asked what you do "I have an internet business" it's automatically assumed that it's an adult business.

Everybody that knows me personally knows what I do and they are 100% supportive of it....those that aren't are no longer part of my life, because they were not true "friends" at all.

Three most common comments I get from people are:
1. "How's the website going???"
2. "You go GIRL!"
3. "Really?.....I'll check it out!"

Close 4th is "How was ______________ (fill in name of last convention)?"

Furthermore, I would just like to say that the way that we conduct ourselves personally reflects upon the industry as a whole. If we slink around acting ashamed of what we do it will give others the idea that even we believe that we are doing something wrong.

MetaMan 08-12-2007 09:23 AM

never happened to me, i am actually quite sweet and enjoyable.

no one likes sleazy ass bastards at their party in the first place, let alone ones who work in porn. :thumbsup

BlondeBecks 08-12-2007 09:30 AM

A note regarding our children.....I completely agree, but here it's fairly common for a parent to be in the biz or at least have other friends in the biz. My daughters friends don't even really ask what I do, they kinnda make certain assumptions. My daughter has never lost a friend due to what I do.....but she has lost quite a few to jelousy of her.

Juicy D. Links 08-12-2007 09:32 AM

i tell people i am retired.

then if they want more details i tell em i just sold YouTube

brand0n 08-12-2007 09:35 AM

gay porn but only on the internet.

armed robberys, push little old ladys down for pension checks.

kristin 08-12-2007 10:00 AM

Considering the amount of national publicity you have had, I would think it would be hard to lie about what you do.

ultimatebbwdotcom 08-12-2007 10:08 AM

I never explain, only because people are hypocrites.

Why bother explaining to people (and lets face it, they never quite get it) what you do when chances are they'll form a negative opinion of you but, wont have any issues going home, switching on the PC and jacking themselves silly to it 5 minutes later.

So its always "I design website templates"

OMG.... July 5th.. I had to defend my son against the "Bling Daddy" in court! It was some crazy shit...

My Ex's lawyer came at me with pictures... the whole nine fucking yards. I had a good judge, and she said and I quote "being in the adult industry does not make one a bad parent".

I was lucky... and I got the custody I wanted! :thumbsup

Jim_Gunn 08-12-2007 10:23 AM

I moved recently after neighbors in the gated community that I lived in for the last few years figured out who I was. I was told that one of the neighbors was so curious about what I did and why I kept to myself so much and why I was around in the daytime so often and why I had the occasional mini-skirted girls coming over my place that they went through my trash and found some Jim Gunn related mail and googled me.

So I moved to a house in a regular neighborhood with no guard gate or community association, I shred all my mail now and I started telling people that I am a freelance videographer for some reality tv shows. That explains my odd hours, explains why they might see me load camera gear into my vehicle and also explains why I might have the occasional pretty young girl over my house. If they press for details, I say that I am currently filming some aspiring Latin singer named Esmerelda for a pilot that might show up on Univision....

GITZINGER 08-12-2007 10:39 AM

I don't care who knows what I do, generally I tell people just to see the look on their face and hear their response.

so I don´t feel unconfortable or arroused at non-porn parties.....

Pornwolf 08-12-2007 11:30 AM

For those of you who say, "Go ahead and tell people, you shouldn't be ashamed of what you do" I will quote what I said in a previous thread about this subject. I'm sure Steve and some of the other Veterans understand what I am saying:

Quote:

I'm guessing you guys are still in your early 20's or younger.

Take a tip: Keep your mouth shut. You are an internet marketer.

Young people are more understanding than older ones. Once you get over 25 you will notice that stigma being detrimental to your professional life as well. You won't want to be doing adult all of your life. Or, you may want to diversify and the smut stigma WILL get in the way.

No one has to know what you do.

Clark Miller 08-12-2007 11:40 AM

:pimp Yeah, it wasn't easy telling Mom... I don't exactly spread it around. It will get you points with certain chicks... and the unblinking awe of some fellas... :1orglaugh
