Have you ever used a TORRENT (etc) site?

Anonymous poll, be honest.

And I mean "illegal" ones for mp3s, xvids, video games, software. Plus other general methods of piracy distribution. Rapidshare, kazaa, irc, ftp, whatever.

I don't want to see the results skewed by "yea I used this super rad legal torrent site for emo bands."

:thumbsup

Exactly... my wife goes to choir practice right when Smallville is on, so I download it the next day.
or if we miss Heroes...

stuff like that.

File sharing isn't automatically illegal. It's a question of what you're sharing.

D 06-05-2007 02:33 PM

A few times as a kid. Warez Boards, and the like.

But that's really about it. Where's the "reformed 0day kid" option? :1orglaugh

A lot of programs these days (Heroes, for example) can be viewed in their entirety off their respective network's website... 100% legally.

Yes, all of us sitting on the couch watching a 400 pixel wide video on my 19" monitor is pretty comfy but not all that great.

So no thanks. I'd rather download it and burn it to dvd and watch it on my tv.

Viper2K1 06-05-2007 03:00 PM

I don't use torrents ... because somehow I can't get that shit to work :)
probably my isp has some ports blocked or my router has them blocked dunno

gideongallery 06-05-2007 04:37 PM

i hate the assumption that all torrents are illegal
i downloaded the entire fedora set using a torrents and it was 7 yimrd gsdyrt than downloading it from the mirror

as for tv shows many countries outside the US can't access the online version
and the online version are usually a much lower quality than one you can download via torrents

Spunky 06-05-2007 04:43 PM

Get Tivo, or if you're in Australia FoxtelIQ. Why you'd waste all that time downloading it than burning it when you could just press one button and it'd do it for you I have no idea, both are pretty cheap now days.

hzoltan 06-06-2007 02:19 AM

I use it, because dvds and cds are expensive here... and if I don't upload anything, it's not a crime :)

aico 06-06-2007 02:23 AM

Never have, don't even know how to do it.

Which makes me wonder....
1) watch the episode online if it's the network's website = ok
2) watch the episode at a later time if I record it = ok
3) watch the episode online from a torrent I downloaded = illegal

So basically I'm being called a hypocrite in this thread because I use a torrent rather than just record it myself or watch it in a little window on the nbc website.

Funny how that works.

It seems to me that GFY thinks "torrent" is a bad word. That any time anyone says the word they are doing something illegal.

Paranoia runs rampant around these parts.

If you are downloading TV shows on torrent websites (and thus also uploading to everyone else in the swarm), you are taking part in an ILLEGAL activity. You better stay out of anti-torrent threads here on GFY now.

When you record shows on your VCR you are also recording the commercials. That is how they make their money.

When you go to their websites to watch the show, you are seeing various ads along the way. Plus the quality is degraded so that you'll want to watch the reruns on TV or buy the DVDs when they come out.

Torrents have the commercials edited out so they aren't making anything there, and they are decent video quality so nobody is buying the DVDs. So how exactly are the companies making anything off torrents? You better have a good answer, or you are a hypocrite.

nico-t 06-06-2007 05:17 AM

yes use it sometimes..... you should've made this a public poll btw.

Scott McD 06-06-2007 06:53 AM

I sometimes use them, but not very often...

Ah I see, you're basing this on where money is, not on actual laws or anything that pertains to me.

Well, rest assured that the Canadian government has made certain that the networks and recording industries make their money the moment I purchase the blank dvd.

Oh, and no, it is not illegal.

KILL_FRENZY 06-06-2007 07:26 AM

I use them when I don't find what I'm looking for on my download sites

three words
paid product placement

american idol producers got 26 million from coke vs 24 million in liciencing fees from the tv station. (and off course the fact that the entire show is nothing more than commercial for the CD of the contestants)
