When you record shows on your VCR you are also recording the commercials. That is how they make their money.

When you go to their websites to watch the show, you are seeing various ads along the way. Plus the quality is degraded so that you'll want to watch the reruns on TV or buy the DVDs when they come out.

Torrents have the commercials edited out so they aren't making anything there, and they are decent video quality so nobody is buying the DVDs. So how exactly are the companies making anything off torrents? You better have a good answer, or you are a hypocrite.

The market has responded, and TV Shows are now becoming saturated with product placement. Shows like Heroes are supplementing the show with comics and interactive marketing campaigns, contests etc, to bring clicks/viewers to their advertisers. Technology is just forcing marketers to step up their game a little, and be a bit more creative. Traditional TV advertisiers dont like Torrents any less than they like TiVo (or any kind of HTPC/DVR in general). According to them, you're stealing by fast forwarding commercials.

Yes, I use bittorrent, though not so much anymore. Really just for software, the high dollar kind of stuff I am curious about and want to tinker with, but would never be able to justify purchasing, based on what I would/could do with it.

So basically I'm being called a hypocrite in this thread because I use a torrent rather than just record it myself or watch it in a little window on the nbc website.

Funny how that works.

It seems to me that GFY thinks "torrent" is a bad word. That any time anyone says the word they are doing something illegal.

Paranoia runs rampant around these parts.

My post had nothing to do with torrents being bad. I've used torrent sites before too. I am simply saying, why the heck would you waste your time when there are alternatives which are so much easier and better.

I didn't mean you specifically... but there are a lot of people on here who hear the word "torrent" and immediately think there that anyone involved should be locked up and castrated.

Those people are very close minded and just eager to be the good guy in non existent drama.

Please explain to me like I'm 3 years old how all of my DVDs given away for free is "non existent drama," because I see it otherwise.

How about I steal all of your web content and build my own sites with it, 20,000 times? Would that be "non existent drama" to you?

I can't speak for the rest of the anti-torrent guys around here, but they directly hit me hard.

I recently moved outside the US where I don't get to see my favorite shows anymore so I download them daily. Sadly, the other options are not available here. But when I lived in the states I used to record them and fast forward through the commercials. :2 cents:

donkevlar 07-02-2007 10:23 AM

Bump for more votes... you can't all be this hypocritical!

donkevlar 08-14-2007 03:39 PM

Bump... This definitely applies today..

[ScreaM] 08-14-2007 03:43 PM

Nope, and I don't plan to use them either.

conducting a poll of this nature on gfy is like asking how fox news viewers feel about gays

majority of gfy posters will vote wrong just to fuck with the results, not to mention majority of gfy'ers these days are not full time webmasters

HomerSimpson 08-14-2007 03:53 PM

sometimes to download some episodes I've missed (sopranos, simpsons etc...)

Fap 08-14-2007 03:54 PM

I think everyone has tried it atleast once..
