Please tell me most Austrians are not this dumb

VIENNA, Austria (AP) - In some ways, Hiasl is like any other Viennese: He indulges a weakness for pastry, likes to paint and enjoys chilling out watching TV.

But he doesn't care for coffee, and he isn't actually a person?at least not yet.

In a case that could set a global legal precedent for granting basic rights to apes, animal rights advocates are seeking to get the 26- year-old male chimpanzee legally declared a "person."

Hiasl's supporters argue he needs that status to become a legal entity that can receive donations and get a guardian to look out for his interests.

"Our main argument is that Hiasl is a person and has basic legal rights," said Eberhart Theuer, a lawyer leading the challenge on behalf of the Association Against Animal Factories, a Vienna animal rights group.

Yes, that kind of behaviour only happens in Austria, where it is common.

Corporations are persons here so who's dumber?

rapmaster 05-09-2007 02:04 AM

So if this chimp is declared a person, could he legally become the president of that country?

HAIL TO THE CHIMP!

I have no idea what you are trying to say. Are you suggesting Canadians would do it if they had a monkey?

P.S. Corporations are persons in the US as well.

No, corporations are not people. Individuals can incorporate, but that does not make the corporation a person, just the opposite.

And there is nothing dumb about doing that.

A corporation is technically, a juristic person
So you're both right... and wrong (kinda). :1orglaugh

A juristic person is an artificial entity through which the law allows a group of natural persons to act as if it were a single composite individual for certain purposes.

Kind of like a jury . . . which is probably where jury came from.

The point was that if it's dumb so extend rights granted to a person to an ape then I can't see how it's not also dumb to extend these same rights to a corporation.

"Corporations were established in constitutional law as 'persons' within the meaning of the 14th Amendment."

That article doesn't really discuss how the corporation is a jurisdictional person which is consisted of a group of natural persons so maybe there's a better article out there.

The word jury comes from the French noun "jure" meaning an oath, judicial inquiry, or inquest.

Etymology is a hobby of mine.

No I'm not and the only thing I see is two example of applying rights granted to humans to two entities that are not. Can't you see that?

If you can't see the difference between granting a fucking monkey the status of a human, and determining that a corporation should speak as the voice of one person rather than the individual voices of all the stockholders, you have some serious issues.

I really hope you are kidding.

Gunni 05-10-2007 03:13 AM

can't they just make the ape a corporation and thus giving him the rights of a human?

gangbangjoe 05-10-2007 03:21 AM
