Is widescreen monitor a fad or here to stay?
Do you think people will get tired/bored with widescreen monitors and return to the regular 4:3 ones?
|
simply put no

I wont go back to 4:3 now dude ...
WS is THE biz! :D We both have them here at Twisted :) |
widescreen will become standard.

I'm not a fan of them (yet), but I do want one. maybe if I get used to one
|
The non-widescreen lcd monitors are 5:4 not 4:3.
|
Of course it depends on the type of work you do on your PC. Its unable to tell you if its better WS or 4:3, it depends on the priorities (watching movies, playing games or surfing net).

The reality is that more and more of our "visual entertainment" is coming over the internet. From downloaded movies to playing DVD's on your PC, it seems to be where people are going.
Combine that with the move to HD tv (which is widescreen by definition) and it gets easier to understand. For the average surfer, a net enabled PC running their video system isn't that far off, and that will always be to a wide screen monitor (TV). Get use to it. Pretty soon 1200 wide will be considered narrow. |
Happy & Prosporous New Year !!!!
|
Speaking of widescreens... I bought a 19" widescreen LCD last week. Installed the drivers and everything, but I can't set the monitor to it's native resolution of 1440x900. Any ideas?

Only wide screen for me, since I got my new laptop.
Now I need a wide screen t.v. |
I don't think widescreen will remain for monitors forever.
Eventually once monitors get big enough it'll get annoying to have to move the head so much sideways again. But we'll use widescreen for the next ten years or so. |
I don't think widescreen is just a fad.
With all the HD TVs, Movies, video game systems and new laptops being 16:9 (widescreen aspect ratio), it makes sense that widescreen desktop displays will become the standard in the next few years. |
I like widescreens, but the reason I like them if for the tools I run on the sides of my screens.. for the average user, I doubt they really care... Unless the game makers start focusing on widescreen, I see no really reason to worry about it...
Thinking about aiming sites at higher resolution users anyway, they are the ones who are willing to cough up the cash.. |

So your saying you would rather look up then over? I find over much easier on the neck. Widescreen is here to stay for sure. Just look at TVs, 4 years ago a widescreen was a new and not really accepted. I dont think I have seen a non wide tv in a store (outside of hte small tubes) in at least a year. |

Thanks :) |
I was going to get one, but I'm still not sure, the vertical real estate seems to be about the same ass much smaller 4/3 monitor. For doing webmaster tasks, viewing websites, editing them, programming, etc, there seems to be very little benefit of having a widescreen monitor (same size 4/3 monitor would actually be better for those tasks) Really, the only use is watching movies on the computer, but why would you do that, when you can watch them in the other room on screen 2x the size?
|
i will never go back to regular monitors / tv's ever
widescreen rocks |
Yeah, it's just a fad... just like 21 inch monitors were.

Widescreen is here to stay...16:9 movies and DVDs are as big a reason as any but once you use a widescreen it hooks ya
|
Now the question will be who will come up with the first side scrolling widescreen tours?

I think running 2 applications side by side (or 2 windows of the same application side by side) increases productivity. I've been using dual display setup for awhile and I don't want to go back to a single display. However, these new widescreen monitors allow you to achieve the same results (i.e., run 2 applications side by side), so widescreen displays make sense to me. |
Well, since HD is 16:9 I say... no.

viewing websites with widescreen monitors sucks in my opinion. so much blank space on either side. now the idea of running two browsers side by side or whatever else side by side is appealing but im not a widescreen monitor fan. i usually just burn my movies and watch them on the tv and i don't game online either, so those uses don't appeal to me.
|
Projection monitors are the future. ;)
|
I love my widescreens
|
are you joking? do you know how much money companies invest into building products like widescreens?
it's not just manufacturing, it's research, development, assembly, testing, thousands of salaries. nothing that involved is ever a fad. |
i got a laptop with widescreen (pretty hard to find one that doesn't these days hehe), which I only like when I watch a movie on it
has some advantages when doing stuff in photoshop might also be cool for games that support widescreens but for my main monitor I picked a non-widescreen I find it important to always see things the way the majority of the surfers see things |

I havent tried them yet
|
I'm hoping to get a nice 24" widescreen this year sometime :)
|
I have a widescreen and I love it.. I also have a 42 inch plasma and a 27 inch LCD I have computer's hooked to and love them. The side's fill out nicely. NOT a problem... my laptop is a regular 15 inch (lol(
|
I don't own a screen that isn't a widescreen. I'd say it's here to stay. People like "bigger" and "more".
|
I think it's going to become the norm, since more and more of our customers are purchasing wide-screen TVs. Widescreen will ultimately become the normal aspect ratio for everything.
|
I think everyone will do widescreen fo rlife..
