As an Israeli citizen, I was disgusted by the question and some of the answers.
2 days ago 3 people were murdered in Tel Aviv after 2 suicide bombers detonated themselves over them only 8 miles from where I live.
3 days ago 9 Israelis were murdered after Palestinian terrorists opened fire at civilians.

After 9/11, when 3000 innocent American citizens were massacred by the world's biggest terrorist, I thought that at least Americans will see that terrorism must be fought 24/7/365 with "no buts".
Murderers (and their senders) of innocent people who detonate themselves over moms, dads & children with the intentional aim of murdering them do not deserve to live.

A better analogy would be the failed hostage rescue attempt during President Carter's term. That plan was virtually doomed to fail, and we were probably lucky that it failed in the first of its four phases. I don't know what military genius came up with that plan, but having spent more than 30 years in the Army, I can assure you that there are far too many of these genius types in the upper echelon.

Having said that it is usually civilian micro managment that is at fault when military operations go south, as was the case in Somalia.

On September 11 2001 I went with a colleague on mine to a business meeting.
Back then, I was working as a sales manager of a mainstream internet company.
After the meeting ended (it was something like 15:00 pm if I remember right) we got into my car and decided to grab launch somewhere since we didn't eat yet.
We headed to a Chinese restaurant.

On the way, I turned the radio on in the car and I heard someone describing how 2 airplanes were smashed into the Twin Towers.
At first, I thought I didn't understand it right.
I was sure it was some kind of a sketch or a discussion about a science fiction book.
After a minute I understood something horrible has happened.
We reached the restaurant which had a TV set turned on, showing pictures from the scene.

I was glued to screen, shocked, amazed and practically paralyzed.
Since I couldn't comtinue with my work, I took the rest of the off and drove straight to my home where I saw the live coverage of CNN.
Those images of mass murder chilled me.
As a person who lives in a country that suffers from terrorism for many years, I felt that the terrorists hurt me, my family and my people.
