New biz...in a year i might move to Korea and open an English academy

i have family contacts here...and investment capital.

opportunity is huge....i have a B.sc. mathematics...so i can teach both english and math.

id hire 2-3 fresh grads from cdn universities to come over as well.

ive been giving it some serious thought...after a year or so..i could just sit back and chat on gfy all day while other people do the actual teaching

and mostly id just go back to canada to recruit good teachers once or twice a year.

asia is going crazy for english

any thoughts on this...i always appreciate gfyers insight

beleive it or not...there are some smart biz people here

OK, if you want some ideas, here they are. In Vancouver, there are literally tens of thousands of Korean students who come here for months at a time to study English. Their parents cough up good money for them to make the journey...

Maybe find out what they are coming here to learn if anything beyond the obvious and try to replicate it there.

Maybe do a "tie-in" with a school here so they do half the course in Korea and then half in Vancouver so they get to experience North America...that they are dying to see.

Combine ESL with outdoor adventure stuff if you do something in Vancouver as it is a huge draw.

My idea was to buy one of the run down welfare hotels downtown here in Vancouver, and turn it into the city's first ESL dorm. The city imposed strict restrictions against conversions of low income housing units so i am sol but i thought of neat side ventures like one of those coupon books geared to esl student needs, wkend adventure trips... There is huge huge money if you have a good angle as they come by the thousands every few months.

StickyGreen 11-21-2006 01:58 AM

good luck with that...

yeah that is another good idea...i thought of that when i met my wife...as she was in toronto to learn english....the issue there was hard to get students.

but if i went to korea..my family could round up a lot of students here

i get excited whenever i see an opportunity to make money

Can you handle living in Korea?

Never been however the Koreans I have met have been a total blast.

If you can I would, not everything in life has to be about making money there is always something valuable you can get out of life from living it.

Hell you got 75 maybe 80 years on this planet would you rather go to Korea for a couple years give it a go and maybe make a fortune or do you want to stay in your same town? It will still be there if you want to come back ;)

My sister taught English in Japan during the 90's and made ridiculous money and incredible contacts. Go for it, opportunities like that are rare and you know that it will work so nothing should hold you back.

If I wasn't married now I would be doing the exact same thing. And honestly I still may down the line. You only live once. Live right...

BTW I am married to a Korean/American girl so you know I love Korean culture, food and women! Do it man....

CuriousToyBoy 11-21-2006 03:43 AM

Count me in Brad.

And I am also qualified to write and present training programs in the real world.

I almost went to Japan to do this a few years back.

Great opportunity.

;-)

North Korea is going to start some shit. Stay very, very south my brother.
We are beefing up our troop strength on the 38th.

HEAT 11-21-2006 04:24 AM

Yes. Koreans are REALLY crazy for English.
Crazy Korean parents.. lol

Open it in Taegu(10s of colleges there) or Pusan(2nd biggest city in SK).
you will see big gold mines.

reynold 11-21-2006 07:06 AM

I hope success awaits for you in that place. Good luck. :)

Choppa 11-21-2006 07:24 AM

Best of luck with it. My niece and her husband went to japan 2 years ago and taught "engrish". many asian speaking countries are very interested in learning english....

NinjaSteve 11-21-2006 07:32 AM

4Man 11-21-2006 07:41 AM

it is all i can think of

hell just 30 students a month would be money

id like to have 150 a month

5 teachers needed...the math is easy:)

stickyfingerz 11-21-2006 07:54 AM

My wife was an English major at Kyoto University and taught in Japan at an English school there for several years. She came over here to do some student teaching at a middle school here in TN, and thats when we met. They pay pretty well over there.

average teacher is making under 3k a month

but you need to supply them with housing etc

Z 11-21-2006 08:54 AM

I love your idea, but a couple things:

1. Teaching english to a Korean is one thing, but teaching math to them? Aren't they the kids that made us all feel stupid because they were doing trig in elementary school? :-)

2. What the guy said up above about N. Korea has some teeth. Stay in the deep South bro and keep your head down. If those fuckers come in, they're coming hard. Remember that they have artillery all set up and waiting for one button push to put three rounds of high explosive on every square meter of Seoul. You don't want to be within 100 miles of that place when/if that happens.

Ramos 11-21-2006 08:55 AM

I'll join you.

I work for Kimchi Chigae

MaddCaz 11-21-2006 08:59 AM

good luck with that

Aquarius 11-21-2006 09:01 AM

Best of luck bro.

marko13 11-21-2006 09:03 AM

every idea has to be realised.... if you see that that is untapped market than make some research or pay someone to do that for you and invest some money... i'm wishing you good luck....

Jman 11-21-2006 09:50 AM

My ex Girlfriend who lives in Toronto was an ESL teacher in Korea for a while. ALthough it was not the best monies in the world apparently she did like it.

Darkland 11-21-2006 09:57 AM

My sister is there right now doing that very same thing fresh out of college and is making some pretty decent money. They have them already but would work well somewhere that they dont I imagine.

Ace_luffy 11-21-2006 10:01 AM

goodluck for your plans

carol.prime 11-21-2006 10:24 AM

Have you seen the program "English Teachers"? It's about english/american people traveling to Taiwan and working as teachers! It is actually one of my favourite programs! Shows on "E" here in Norway
