New biz...in a year i might move to Korea and open an English academy
i have family contacts here...and investment capital.
opportunity is huge....i have a B.sc. mathematics...so i can teach both english and math. id hire 2-3 fresh grads from cdn universities to come over as well. ive been giving it some serious thought...after a year or so..i could just sit back and chat on gfy all day while other people do the actual teaching and mostly id just go back to canada to recruit good teachers once or twice a year. asia is going crazy for english any thoughts on this...i always appreciate gfyers insight beleive it or not...there are some smart biz people here |

OK, if you want some ideas, here they are. In Vancouver, there are literally tens of thousands of Korean students who come here for months at a time to study English. Their parents cough up good money for them to make the journey...
Maybe find out what they are coming here to learn if anything beyond the obvious and try to replicate it there. Maybe do a "tie-in" with a school here so they do half the course in Korea and then half in Vancouver so they get to experience North America...that they are dying to see. Combine ESL with outdoor adventure stuff if you do something in Vancouver as it is a huge draw. My idea was to buy one of the run down welfare hotels downtown here in Vancouver, and turn it into the city's first ESL dorm. The city imposed strict restrictions against conversions of low income housing units so i am sol but i thought of neat side ventures like one of those coupon books geared to esl student needs, wkend adventure trips... There is huge huge money if you have a good angle as they come by the thousands every few months. |

Can you handle living in Korea?
Never been however the Koreans I have met have been a total blast. If you can I would, not everything in life has to be about making money there is always something valuable you can get out of life from living it. Hell you got 75 maybe 80 years on this planet would you rather go to Korea for a couple years give it a go and maybe make a fortune or do you want to stay in your same town? It will still be there if you want to come back ;) |

My sister taught English in Japan during the 90's and made ridiculous money and incredible contacts. Go for it, opportunities like that are rare and you know that it will work so nothing should hold you back.
If I wasn't married now I would be doing the exact same thing. And honestly I still may down the line. You only live once. Live right... BTW I am married to a Korean/American girl so you know I love Korean culture, food and women! Do it man....

Count me in Brad.
And I am also qualified to write and present training programs in the real world. I almost went to Japan to do this a few years back. Great opportunity. ;-)

My wife was an English major at Kyoto University and taught in Japan at an English school there for several years. She came over here to do some student teaching at a middle school here in TN, and thats when we met. They pay pretty well over there.

I love your idea, but a couple things:
1. Teaching english to a Korean is one thing, but teaching math to them? Aren't they the kids that made us all feel stupid because they were doing trig in elementary school? :-) 2. What the guy said up above about N. Korea has some teeth. Stay in the deep South bro and keep your head down. If those fuckers come in, they're coming hard. Remember that they have artillery all set up and waiting for one button push to put three rounds of high explosive on every square meter of Seoul. You don't want to be within 100 miles of that place when/if that happens. |

Have you seen the program "English Teachers"? It's about english/american people traveling to Taiwan and working as teachers! It is actually one of my favourite programs! Shows on "E" here in Norway
