Is it safe or ok to spray air inside computer?

I just opened case to computer, & there's dust everywhere..

Is it safe to blast it with a can of air?

How do you clean yours out?

macmark 10-25-2006 06:12 AM

Yes, I often use compressed air to clean my computers.

Spunky 10-25-2006 06:16 AM

Yes..make sure everything is unplugged of course and don't get too close to the components..blast air from a distance

dennisthemenace 10-25-2006 06:18 AM

Absolutely.
I shut it down, open it up, blow air in from a can to loosen things up then vacuum up the mess. Every time I vacuum my office I hit the cracks and openings real quick just to keep the air flowing nicely.

FetishDollars 10-25-2006 06:20 AM

Yes, i do the same. But be sure you do it out of house cause the dust would be evrywhere around :-)

spacedog 10-25-2006 06:22 AM

thanks :)

Spunky 10-25-2006 06:29 AM

You can do the same thing with your keyboard.Spray Fantastic and use a old toothbrush and blast the crap away with air..comes out like new

donross 10-25-2006 06:50 AM

there's a USB vacuum cleaner... or mini vacuum cleaner with AA batteries would work... brush included..

Stallion 10-25-2006 06:51 AM

I do it all the time to clean out my pc's..

JoshyJ 10-25-2006 07:02 AM

Can of air is made primarily for cleaning computers.

Personally i use a huge industrial air compresser, from a far away distance of course, dust gone in 2 seconds.

Thanks for reminding me. Looks like my keyboard badly needs some serious cleaning too. :)

Youve never encountered dust in your computer?

wow there must be a lot then, I air mine out every couple months....that processor fan is constantly sucking in dust bunnies and what not....it in turn sticks mainly to your processor fan/cooler. and over time will slow your fan down and let your chip heat up, it can be the end of some computers..

just odd that youve never noticed or seen the dust inside before....I assume you been doing this a few

u-Bob 10-25-2006 07:53 AM

yes it's safe, I do it all the time.

NinjaSteve 10-25-2006 08:12 AM

Yeah, I also use wireless ones. You can get a cheap Labtec one for like 20 bucks. Not bad at all considering not a single one has failed, although I use them for short periods of times.

Being as this is an old thread ....

take the fucker to the car wash, it does wonders!

:1orglaugh

Matt 26z 12-24-2006 09:56 PM

I use a yard blower. Just don't get too close. I also open up the power supply and blow that out.

I know you were just joking, but their compressed air pump can be used for more than just tires. I've used it to clean stuff before that I couldn't easily get into.

biftek 12-24-2006 10:06 PM

i use a bike pump with the stem on it , allow me to get direct air where its needed most , primaritly on the heatsink blowing all the dust out of the fins

tony286 12-24-2006 10:23 PM

compressed air and a vacuum

if you know a little about computers you better take the fan off the heatsink on the cpu since due to the amount of time the dust has had to settle it will be sticky so air will not remove it. You will have to manually clean it. Especially if you're a smoker this will be required.

Vitasoy 12-25-2006 03:12 AM

As long as you power it off and ground yourself.

BV 12-25-2006 03:38 AM

i take mine out in the driveway remove the side panel and blow it out with my air compressor. a leaf blower works also.

been doing it forever with no problems

the PC case is flawed from the get go, it's basically a vacuum cleaner or room air purifier with no filter. They should have a cleanable filter, the insides would stay cleaner longer. :2 cents:

woj 12-25-2006 03:45 AM

vaccum cleaner works pretty well too :thumbsup

wyldworx 12-25-2006 03:48 AM

Totally, I would be aware of the pressure and the distance at which you are blowing from.

gecko 12-25-2006 03:54 AM

sure is, I do it all the time

that might cause static though

VicD 12-25-2006 05:00 AM

I always clean my computer with water using the gardenhose

suesheboy 12-25-2006 07:51 AM

1) Take the PC outside.

2) Blow with your vacuum cleaner.

Compressors may have too much power and larger ones can spread oil and water

More Booze 12-25-2006 07:53 AM

do NOT vacuum-clean your computer. static electricity can ruin shit inside it...

pussyluver 12-25-2006 08:06 AM

You said really dusty. A garden hose would work better. If you smoke, then a power washer. Don't forget inside the power supply.

The dishwasher does a fairly good job on a keyboard. That mouse is the tricky one.

If you have to ask the question, maybe it would be better to take the PC into the Geek Squad and let them do it right.
