Best guitarist ever?

I was watching some AC/DC vids with the munchkin, as he loves them. Every time I watch, I'm reminded just how damned good Angus Young is.

I think he'd for sure rank in the Top Ten of All Time.

Who are some others that would be on that list?

Jarmusch 08-02-2006 06:44 PM

Steve Vai is high on the list.

tony286 08-02-2006 06:46 PM

angus is good for the songs but not great Jeff Beck would be close to the top

Spunky 08-02-2006 06:46 PM

Think Angus is good? Malcom is even better. He's just too shy to play out on stage. I have an interview of Angus saying that he feels foolish being the "lead" guitarist when his brother can play circles around him.

But as for best guitarist? I'd have to say a toss up between John Petruci, Brendt Allman, Vai and Eric Johnson. Depending on my mood. it's all subjective really..

Minte 08-02-2006 07:15 PM

Steve Morse,Eric Johnson,Al Dimeola,Craig Chaquico are a few of my favorites and if you like 6-string acoustic..Tommy Emmanuel is amazing.

szango420 08-02-2006 07:20 PM

Nope... in this discussion it should be assumed it's rock 'n roll guitar.

The other three types of guitar gods are snobs and are not only in different genres but all around different disciplines/crafts: Classical snobs, Jazz snobs, Metal snobs.

For straight up rock 'n roll:

Keith Richards
Jimmy Page
Jimi Hendrix
Van Halen

There are many more . . .

what about 'buckethead' and alan holdsworth?

Timbo 08-02-2006 08:18 PM

Randy Rhoads, period.

reynold 08-02-2006 08:32 PM

I'll vote for George Harrison. "Here Comes The Sun" and "Lord I wanna Know You" offer a different type of melody compared to other songs we have right now.

L-Pink 08-02-2006 08:33 PM

Hendrix ... and ... Duane Allman (the real Laya guitarist)

some great ones mentioned, but one I feel is under appreciated is Michaelangelo from Nitro

Huskie 08-03-2006 09:46 AM

The best in the world has probably never been famous, probably some kid in his room, my guess is some Mexican kid.

I also can't say who the best famous player is, but I can say that from my experience of guitar players Santana plays with more soul than almost anyone I have seen, he may not be the quickest or the best technical player, but the sound he can create is really quite amazing since majority of it is made up on the spot.

This is a pretty decent list Paul Gilbert and Adrian van den Berg could be added....this is all rock though....there's great jazz guitarist players aswell. :thumbsup

Lance69 08-03-2006 09:59 AM

For pure Guitar pleasure I gotta go with Joe Satriani. Lots of people can play, he composes and plays every instrument. Including the incredible guitar licks that are comparable only to a Horny Angel! (Sorry bad Meatloaf reference!)

Huskie 08-03-2006 10:00 AM

I really need to check out Joe Satriani, that sthe one name I have heard of consistently for years and am ashamed to say I have never heard his work :)
