Have You Ever Had To Fire Anyone?

I've fired a few in my day but thankfully not too many recently :)

Were you nervous, were you angry, did you have someone else handle it for you?

Lets here some good firing stories and some nightmare stories :pimp

fired a guy that stole some shit - had 4 kids and wife to support

XxXotic 06-22-2006 08:34 PM

I've had to fire a few people, most of which were complete morons so I had no problem, but a few good people I had to let go and it more hurt my feelings then made me nervous or anything

TheDatingNetworkCameron 06-22-2006 08:34 PM

Yeah ive had to do it. Really sucked.

I was a Shop Steward and basically relayed the message to the guys first hand..was hard to tell men older than me with mortgages and kids that we're having a meeting in 5 minutes to make it official

Internet Guy 06-22-2006 08:35 PM

It sucks, and it always will. But it gets easier.

he-fox 06-22-2006 08:35 PM

In the past I had to fire too many, like 50, and I never liked it. Fortunately, now I don't have to fire anybody.

Tdog 06-22-2006 08:36 PM

Some chick forged my signature on a check for her weekly pay. She said I was out and didnt think I would be back in time to sign the check.

Totally fired.

xclusive 06-22-2006 08:37 PM

I've fired a few in my day but luckily none had family, That would have been harder.

jimmy-3-way 06-22-2006 08:41 PM

I've BEEN fired a lot.

It's kinda fun making the guy sweat, I always know when it's in the mail.

i have a good one, but too tired to tell it all...

the summary:
my office manager had keys to my house. came in while i was away. copied all my personal credit card numbers. went on a huge spending spree... told me she was going to pay it back (it was like 4 years of her salary) before i noticed (she paid all my bills business/personal btw).... so fucking fired...

was going to call police but she called the cc companies, told them she did it and they erased all the charges and she worked it out....

the cc companies did it with no hassles to me.. so no police...

i think i got lucky cause all the shipments didnt go to my house but to her home address...

and this is the short version of the story....

the moral... its sad, but in business you have to treat every employee like a thief... not saying you treat them bad, you just have to count on them stealing from you and protect yourself accordingly...

WiredGuy 06-22-2006 09:03 PM

Just got back from Vegas, had a rough night sleep on the redeye. Got 1 hour break between getting back home and the office, walked in and fired the property manager. Unfortunately he's a shareholder so he'll never really go away... :(

Not exactly firing, because they weren't employed, but I used to have guys come along and have 2-way radios fitted in their cars to work as cab drivers: the ones who didn't pay their fees or were totally useless had to be "taken off-circuit".

Which was usually quite routine. I talked to the guy for a few minutes, long enough for someone to discreetly get the radio back. Except this one time the guy blew up almost as soon as I started talking, stormed out to his car and burned rubber out of the warehouse... with my assistant manager lying on his rear floor, half-in and half-out of the car.

It was one of those situations which could have been anything but funny. Fortunately, he wasn't hurt and the picture of his legs flailing around as the car shot away has stuck with me for years.

I've had to fire in a previous job...went well. They understood.

LOL classic Brian. I can't really see u firing someone.

Splum 06-22-2006 09:37 PM

After the dot-com bubble burst I had to fire all three of my employees, my sister, my brother and my dad. :(

DateDoc 06-22-2006 09:40 PM

Firing someone is rarely fun. You just have to do it and get it over with so it is less aggravation to you. Worrying about their kids and wife at home is not your responsibility. They fucked up to get fired so they screwed over their family not you.

Being nervous, angry or showing any emotion don't help - it's pointless.

I just like to get the facts straight before any of that stuff - else it could be a total injustice.

Yea.. lost track of the numbers, but for all sorts of reasons - most serious were instances of theft or similar, but more common is folks can't actually do whatever job - they are just useless even with extra coaching and can't help it, so just try to be "nice" with em and let them go.

Pron Don 06-22-2006 09:55 PM

not yet!

Snake Doctor 06-22-2006 10:00 PM

I used to manage convenience stores and had to fire people for theft all the time.

I remember one girl in particular, I had her dead to rights on the camera charging her friends .01 or .04 for a case of beer, shit like that.
I showed this to her on the camera and she still "didn't do it" :1orglaugh

Usually we didn't have cold hard evidence like this, we just knew that the numbers didn't add up and let people go based on that.
I just remember thinking at the time that this girl so emphatically denied any wrongdoing even while she was watching herself do it on camera that she almost had me convinced it was a mistake. :1orglaugh

beemk 06-22-2006 10:06 PM

dude that was my partner account!

Wow, this is a good thread to get your entire office shaken up.

You better take the GTS crew out to lunch or some shit now. :1orglaugh

Had to toast a programmer recently who didn't do shit for months. Problem was he had access to everything so it was tricky to get rid of him.

Gave him a week off he wanted but not before requesting a backup of the server contents. Went to the colo, unplugged the server brought it back and formatted the machine, sent it to a new facility, loaded up the backup, hired a new programmer... TADA!

The guy was a douche. Only thing that made me feel guilty is that he knocked up his girlfriend and she was 2 months preggo.

the Shemp 06-22-2006 11:37 PM

always liked to get rid of the crooks and the dead wood...

rip raster 06-22-2006 11:43 PM

kind of reminds me of a job where we were told to fire the least productive person on the team at the end of every week

Jakke PNG 06-22-2006 11:51 PM

I've never fired anyone..but I've been fired once. Well, the company I worked for went broke and they had to let me and my friend go. It was sort of funny to see how worried the owners were, they were asking for a few weeks whether we have another job already, are we gonna be alright etc.. We both were just accepted to a college the following week, so the owners were relieved.
It was sort of bizarre, you'd think the owners would be more concerned about THEIR own future income and whatnot, considering their business went down the drain. :)

gooddomains 06-22-2006 11:53 PM

Firing and hiring is daily business for a long time

RogerV 06-23-2006 12:05 AM

the first few times it was difficult but then it became part of just doing my job and running a good business.. I've fired many including friends I have no problem doing it..

Bake 06-23-2006 12:21 AM

Its just another job that has to be done. Ive never fired out of spite only because worked slowed down or they were dickheads.

Choppa 06-23-2006 12:33 AM

yes had to do it several times unfortunately

boldy 06-23-2006 12:38 AM

on Fire yes, to fire no ..

SleazyDream 06-23-2006 01:04 AM

i think more people on here, have been fired than have had to fire someone :2 cents:

There's lot of stories from those days. Cabs and motorcycle couriers... you get all kinds of people trying them out for a living and all kinds of people using the services. It seemed like most days something happened. Often funny.

You put several hundred guys (and a few girls) out on the road, never see them from one week to the next and standards/discipline tend to slip. So from time to time we would fire people over the air to wake everyone up: except those were always fake firings of people who didn't exist (the two-ways only let people hear what the office was saying). You had to be there I guess, but me, my assistant manager and a couple of controllers could all get quite creative since the whole thing was for show :)

SmutGiant 06-23-2006 02:16 AM

I've been fired by DH before.

This is a true story...

The day before I got fired I bought a hot dog from the hot dog vendor near the GTS office (the one accross from the Pizza Pizza, don't know if he's still there or not). Anyways, as my hot dog was cooking he's like three people I talked to this week lost their jobs, I think I'm cursed. He's like watch you're gonna get fired... less than 24hrs later... :firehair

It was pretty bizarre... not that I was surprised i got fired, i think i used up like two years worth of sick days and lates in six weeks. That and my habit of staying up until 5am kinda messes with your functionality at a day job.

Anyways in short, everyone I've known including myself that got fired got so because they were a drain on the businesses they were employed by.

I think that people who get fired see it coming... they know they've either lost interest or slacked off or got addicted to crack or world of warcraft or whatever.

Pinklinkz 06-23-2006 02:17 AM

i have 2 stories .lol
i had a shop and my wife worked for me, but this was causing marital strain, so I fired her ... lol ... she still hasn't got over it.
After I got a buyer for the shop I got a propper job as a thrmoforming manager, a new machine was brought onto the market that only needed 1 person to operate it, and took the place of 150 men, so I had to choose one person for training and make all the rest redundant 125 people out of work right on top of christmas and all hating me. To add insult to injury, it meant I only had 5 people on my shift so I was made redundant also

but yeah it sucks

$5 submissions 06-23-2006 02:18 AM

I've had to fire quite a few in the past. Not exactly happy moments :( Anyway, it's all good.

Sarah - GTS 06-23-2006 06:18 AM

I was "terminated" from my last job because they closed down the division. I knew it was coming, so when the president and legal counsel for the head office showed up not only was I expecting it I was happy as punch.
I got a great severance package, and started working full time for Cambo & DH the very next day :}

Brad Gosse 06-23-2006 06:19 AM

I have done so much firing I can honestly say it has become routine for me. I fired my cleaning company last night and it was like calling for pizza. no big deal.

Funbrunette 06-23-2006 06:22 AM

I was a Human Resources Manager for 3 years, needless to say I've had to fire a few people in that time. It's never fun!
