How bad do root canals hurt?

I have one at 3 today and I hate the dentist. Is it really painful cause they said it really isn't that bad......?

Jakke PNG 02-28-2006 02:14 PM

You're gonna cry and feel unbelievable pain..all the way down to your spine.

Nah, not really. It's not nice though, but it doesn't hurt.. atleast as much as getting wisdoms teeth pulled when anaesthetic didn't work.

Jakke PNG 02-28-2006 02:15 PM

I hope that answer helped you overcome your fear.

chowda 02-28-2006 02:15 PM

not bad.
unless ur pulp is still alive.. if its dead already, u wont feel a thing.

Tom_PM 02-28-2006 02:16 PM

It's more uncomfortable than anything else. Just make sure the tooth is numb and you'll be ok :)

James-AR 02-28-2006 02:17 PM

I had it done years ago...the second time I was told I needed one I had the tooth pulled. not going through that again.

Belinda 02-28-2006 02:17 PM

Yeah thanks..... I had my wisdom teeth all pulled on the same day but i was asleep when they did it. This is suppose to take a couple hours i guess cause they also have to put a crown on. I am afraid cause my nerve is still infected at the moment.

Mr. Romance 02-28-2006 02:18 PM

You will be just fine.....

Pornwolf 02-28-2006 02:18 PM

Ask for some morphene and you will be fine.

WiredGuy 02-28-2006 02:19 PM

Does it sound like a pleasant thing? I had it when I was a kid, it wasn't too bad, but the damn needle to numb you is a bitch!
WG

Danny75 02-28-2006 02:19 PM

hurts like a bitch

DamageX 02-28-2006 02:22 PM

Let's put it this way, I got a flashback on the pain just by seeing your thread title.

salsbury 02-28-2006 02:24 PM

the actual procedure didn't hurt any worse than having a filling done, but for me, the injection of novacane (or carbocane or whatever he used) was excruciating. it was an upper tooth, and he had to poke it through an absess (i let it get really bad, heh).

when i went for the followup appointment, to have the hole he drilled filled permanently, i asked him not to shoot me up at all. just had him use the topical stuff.

it didn't hurt all that bad after the procedure, though. and i got some light pain meds. so there ya go.

HomoErectus 02-28-2006 02:25 PM

I had a root canal done about 1.5 yrs ago.. didnt hurt at all.. i told the dentist i dont like needles and i dont like pain.. so he took a couple long q-tips and put some topical on them and then inserted them in my mouth, one on each side of my tooth onto the gum.. left it there a few minutes.. took them out and then brought the needle out to inject some shit into my gums around the tooth. he gave me three of those all around my gum and i didnt feel a damn thing except like someone lightly pushing on my gum with a finger... then he started the procedure.. didnt hurt at all.. was just a little tense is all with the noise of the drill and shit...

Fresh 02-28-2006 02:28 PM

depends on how many shots of numbness the dentist gives you and how difficult it is for him to get to the nerve.

I had 3 rootcanals 2 weeks ago and 4 wisdom teeth pulled last week. Im so glad its over with its not even funny.

good luck!

SetTheWorldonFire 02-28-2006 02:29 PM

Does'nt hurt much if the anaesthetic kicks in. Infected roots don't get numb tho. So the faster you get it done the better.

Belinda 02-28-2006 02:31 PM

So it sounds like as long as they numb me good then things should be OK. Even with my tooth being infected still. I just can't wait to get the uncomfortable feeling i have right now gone. I can hardly eat and all these pills i have to take to help ease the pain is doing a number on my stomach. I hate taking pills.

plyndrty 02-28-2006 02:32 PM

You know what really hurts the most is holding your mouth open for an half hour while he does the root canal.

I had two roots and all I felt was a little pressure. You will be just fine...

WebairGerard 02-28-2006 02:35 PM

yeah they fucking hurt like hell. But the Sweet Air sure feels fine!!

Manowar 02-28-2006 02:36 PM

it fucking canes

I had one done years ago, but the root was infected and several shots of freezing didn't numb it. So the dentist put a final needle down the center of the tooth directly into the root.

It was pretty close to what I'd imagine a shotgun blast to the head would feel like. A lightning bolt of pain jolted me two feet outta the chair - and I usually have a very high pain threshold.

After he scraped me off the ceiling, everything went fine after that. But that pain left an indelible impression.

ready lube 02-28-2006 02:39 PM

Make sure he sticks you with that numbing needle more than a few times. Get your moneys worth and feel no pain!

Best fo luck...I hate the dentist to!

czarina 02-28-2006 02:40 PM

I need one as well.

There is a great alternative to taking pills ;)

Deej 02-28-2006 02:45 PM

Im wondering what my trip to the dentist tomorrow will hold....I have to have a tooth pulled, this one is gone, the only thing lef tis below the gum line, I snapped that bitch right off, thank god it dosnt hurt....it seems like it would, but i may need oral surgery tomorrow....they might be able to pull it out in pieces....wich i hope, thats what i was doing until it made it below my gumline....

i may have aroot canal done on another tooth as well....I hope not....thank god i only have two bad teeth....

teeth and ears can be the worst pain experienced

Tom_PM 02-28-2006 02:46 PM

They'll swab on some topical novacaine stuff that tastes like bubble gum so you dont feel a needle, just a little pressure. Then they'll leave you for a bit to watch TV while the novacaine takes hold. When they come back, just make sure it's really numb. Then it's more uncomfortable than anything, because you have to hold your mouth open while you lay back and watch TV.

Let us know how it goes.

perlcoders 02-28-2006 02:47 PM

it hurts like A BITCH

It has been a while, but as I recall it did not hurt much at all, primarily because they are removing the nerve, which is what allows you to have pain.

No nerves = no pain

Dunno about the ears part...but I'll certainly vouch on the teeth, eh.

But tooth probs are all behind me these days, thankfully :)

Very true, but if your nerve is active, and if the numbing dosnt take full hold, its a bitch for about 2 minutes ;) until said nerve is extinguished

I have a few more cavities after this to fix as well. THose i can handle.

Rochard 02-28-2006 02:52 PM

Here's how you handle the dentist...... Pain killers.

Take one before you drive down there. Take another one while your waiting. Trust me, you'll have a fucking blast.

Don't over do it, however. One time I had two root canals and an extraction planned so I upped my dosage from my personal stash of (perfectly legal) pain killers. So I took three pills before I left, and another three when I got there - a total of six vicidin in less than a half hour. Waited a bit for my friendly (FUCKING NAZI) dentist....... Got up to walk into his office and fell flat on my face.

True story.

Well vicidin makes me puke... I took a half of one before we drove down to party Saturday and I puked whiel sitting at the drive thru. I took half a one later that night and it made me puke as well. Doesn't help that I can't eat.

well they are right....they do need you in ASAP....for both the money, and for the health, it IS good to do it now....you dont want abscensing ... like i have, im taking these antibiotics (clindamyacin HCL)(thanks for reminding me to take them) tham make me fell uneasy and acidic....if you have it dealt with now it will al be better quicker....it is only a minute or two, thats IF they dont numb you.....i had a shitty dentist when mine was done....laster after my appointment whe was charged with malpractice ane pushed out of business.....so yea....also one of myt problems....if you have a good dentist and good "benny's" or if you can pay outright, then your good to go.... my experience was back in highschool when i was on a state health plan...

vicodin makes many people puke, dont be alarmed, but find another source of pain relief

Just make sure that Donny looks after you.

Fred Quimby 02-28-2006 03:31 PM

it was unreal pain for me

apparently normal teeth have 3 nerve endings

I have 4

god really likes pushing me around

bad_girl 02-28-2006 03:51 PM

I can't believe people have said a root canal hurts. It will only hurt should the nerve be infected. Where are you people going for your dental treatment?

Persignup Dustin 02-28-2006 03:52 PM

bad. pretty bad.

THAT made me cringe. Damn! :upsidedow

Michaelious 02-28-2006 04:21 PM

hurts like a bastard

Belinda 02-28-2006 06:32 PM

OK so i am back from the dentist. The good news is that the part that hurt the worst was when I could fianlly close my mouth. They said "ok close your mouth slowly" i assume cause it was open by itself for about an hour. They didn't stick any of those blocks in to help hold it open. My mouth did not want to shut. So there was actually nothing to be worried about cause it didn't hurt at all. THE BAD news is that they could not get down into one of my roots all the way. He said there was like 1mm he couldn't get but it was important to get it all.. SOOOO having that said the worst thing about a root canal in when the root canal doesn't work. I have to go see a speciaist to get that last root BUT i should feel a lot better tomorrow.

reynold 02-28-2006 07:06 PM

I am reminded of the excruciating pain I had last year when my wisdom tooth started growing. I can munch any food for days
