I'm certain this is too complex for %90 of GFY to comprehend, but I'm giving it a shot anyway.




My choice: WW2, Allies. That was the last "real" war and also the last one fought with no complex politics, it was black and white.

Airborne in WW2 Europe. No doubt the greatest generation.

I would say that the US Airborne and the German U-Boat crews were some of the most dedicated and selfless military personel in human history.

I would love to be a soldier in WWII if I had to be...I would not want to be a soldier in the US Civil War where 60,000+ died in a couple of days during the Battle of Gettysburg...(Iraq pales in comparison to that)...could not imagine being the drummer dude or flag carrier knowing you were going to be shot with a 2 inch musket ball.....

I was in the Army for 7 years you dipshit. So yeah, I'm sure what I saw while in Iraq or Somalia was nothing compared to what happened to the 101st during Garden, I'm also as certain that the boys who died in trenches in shithole France during WW1 had worse than that.

Oh man... WW2 was more than 'saving private Ryan'.. it was VERY complex political, before - during - and after, on both sides and internal within the axes and allies.

Anyway, I would say the last "real" war, really worth for other countries to interfere, was on Balkan in the 90's. As NATO and UN soldier, it made sense to go there.

The war on terror. Why? Cause it's relatively easy compared to the other wars. Iraq, sure, why not? Your chances are dying are pretty slim compared to every other war in history. Actually your chances of dying are about the same as a black guy living in Philadelphia... last year's murder capital.

War is not something you wanna be in. Especially the wars in the early to mid 1900's when the military still had people living in really harsh conditions. There was nothing glamorous about that shit so let's not pretend it was.

The nonsense that led up to World War 2 WAS political, and the result of all of us not even beginning to fathom what global war meant, I'll give you that.

The simple fact; that no one grasped at the time, was that we were still all fighting WW1. Nothing had changed man; the same shit that had pissed off Germany and Japan 15 years before was STILL pissing them off. Japan was actually the only one who never rested on their laurels and became complacent. I mean fuck dude, they were kicking the shit out of China.

What started the fracas of "WW2", and made the whole conflict global again is easy to understand.

I.E.: the German anger over Versailles, the Japanese were a little miffed over us cutting their oil supplies off, our OWN policies of isolationism. Etc, etc, etc.

We can go into the intracacies of what LED to war for weeks; but who fucking cares.

Maybe I'm restating a fact everyone is aware of here, I just think it's worth stating that WW2 was also the bloodiest war. More Americans died during the Civil War, but more Americans were killed in WW2. So the Civil War was our deadliest war while WW2 was our bloodiest.

To a certain degree, yes, if you talk about the little soldier. It was simpler as a soldier that time, they had to follow orders. March or die, and that was it. Today, eyes are watching aka media, and even one soldiers behaviour can turn things into some big political. And when you come back today, you are not a hero, only a puppet... a political tool.

But overall, there were many overall political factors during WWII that affected both the strategy and even the morality among the soldiers. The race to Berlin and the negotiations between Japan and Russia are two examples.

World War 2 was the most significant conflict our species ever jumped into. My God, we're still fighting it. There is a STRONG argument that we've been in a global war since 1914. Think about that.

1942 thru 1944 were the most desperate years this nation ever faced. My point is that there WERE no major political impedents, the ONLY factor being considered was victory. The only question (imho) being asked was "how do we WIN". No one cared HOW we won, we just had to win.

Think about that.

This wasnt some banana war like Puller had been fighting, where "ok yeah, some Marines would die; big deal." This WAS a legitimate fight to survive as a NATION.

But honestly, that was the worst part of WWII for both sides. And really, Stalin was even worse than Hitler (with regards to freedom and genocide), so the Soviet people never really won from that war.

Agree, but have to add this; .. had to win most. It was still agendas and split between the allies. Especially when we talk about Russia vs West... beat Stalin to Berlin, bomb Japan instead of Russian invasion. "Small" stuff like that :)
