Best album of 2005?

What was the best album of 2005, outside of that crap that spills out of speakers like puss called rap.

Looking for some good rock/metal/altern/indie/classical/folk/comedy/techno/ambient...anything but rap

Paul McCartney - Chaos and Creation in the Backyard. :thumbsup :thumbsup

Definitely (imo) the best album to be released in 2005.

Kanye's album was patchy. Roses is a great song though, and a few other songs were decent. Same goes with Lil wayne's Carter II. Common's "BE" was probably best hip-hop album released this year.

Coldplay's was up to par, but nothing compared to prior albums (Rush of blood/Parachutes). I'd say if anybody came close, White Stripes had the best album next to Sir Paul. They released a very very solid album. Jack White is a pimp.

looks deeper for great albums of '05 that will be remembered....

Wolf Parade - Apologies To The Queen Mary (Perfect Songwriting, Perfect Playing, Perfectly Accesible)

Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene (See Above)

Animal Collective - Feels (For the more objective listener a.k.a. music nerd...these kids can do things you can't imagine with one chord)

this was, shit,...2 months ago?

hopefully someone zips up the season for the year, if so i'll find the ep #

Maxy 01-24-2006 12:41 AM

good calls silvertab, funeral came out 09/04 but it's still bigger and better and got more listens (and shows i attended) than anything that came out in 2005, including the records I listed....although Wolf Parade is quite a contender, and several members of the Arcade Fire played and recorded on the Wolf Parade record.

haha thats cool. Interpol was one of the bands that made me start listening to modern rock again. I've seen them maybe 9 times in the past 3 years. I've got every riff and lyric from those albums burned into my brain :1orglaugh

Definitely download the Wolf Parade, it's like fuckin candy to me.

p.s. i usually notice your music related posts from like the past year and you're headed good ways :thumbsup

have fun :pimp

haha thing is, my music collection is litterally split in two...
modern/indy/rock etc.. on one site
hardcore/metal etc.. on the other

I cant stick to one genre hehe... ;) Its pretty much a matter of occasion..sometime I feel like listening to groovy/more relax music...other times..Im hyped..and need something brutal and fast :pimp

bhutocracy 01-24-2006 01:00 AM

Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
Animal Collective - Feels
QOTSA - Lullabyes to Paralyze
The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Kaiser Chiefs - Employment

honorable mentions

The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema (liked AC Newman's Slow Wonder'04 better)
Beck - Guero
Iron & Wine - Woman King
Architecture in Helsinki - In Case We Die
My Morning Jacket - Z
Decemberists - Picaresque

SilverTab 01-24-2006 01:01 AM

BTW, do you like the stills??? Cant wait for the new one..

(they are from here hehe so I watch them closely)

Maxy 01-24-2006 01:07 AM

Yeah I liked logic can break your heart record. Very good songs, very memorable melodies, fun shit to listen to, although i havn't given it a play in the longest.

I really can't make sense of the hardcore/metal stuff though. It just seems like forced, melodramatic, and gimmicky, without any emphasis on good melody or meaningful expression....and i also find it rather homoerotic :1orglaugh

I'm tryin to think of some stuff I listen to when I want loud, fast etc.

Deftones
Pixies
Ramones
Stooges?
MC5?

and such...

And Sufjan's Illinois is retardedly good. Seen him perform at lincoln center opera hall in nyc last week backed by shitload of musicians he tours with (horns, strings, organs etc.)... it was awesome.

SilverTab 01-24-2006 01:13 AM

haha metal and hardcore is a completely different thing, but trust me, the emphasis is pretty much EXCLUSIVELY on melody ...its just..not the kind of melody you will notice at first listen..(or if you are not used to the genre)

bands like Between the buried and me are musical genious...(they go from heavy heavy stuff to smooth balad-like songs, and back to full speed..) they are so good its incredible

Maxy 01-24-2006 01:15 AM

If you like those dynamics in music, you might really love a band called Aereogramme.

Try Aereogramme - Sleep & Release ...i think that's what it's called.

SilverTab 01-24-2006 01:17 AM

Damn I forgot about the lastest one from Coheed and Cambria on my top 2005

Yeah.. I don't want to go on too much.. because i hate getting hyped albums that will never match your expectations... but i found it through Amazon's "if you like" etc coincidentally just after it was released and bought it just off the samples... I was pleasantly surprised.. then i read the reviews on pitchfork and RS etc.. and yeah.. if you like folksy falsetto sweet stuff... you should dig it.

Maxy 01-24-2006 01:25 AM

well said and good going controlling yourself on the hype rant, im working on that technique myself :1orglaugh

Matt 26z 01-24-2006 01:25 AM

I listen to a very wide variety, but overall there is a pretty clear winner IMO...

Jacks Mannequin - Everything In Transit

Honorable mentions...

Billy Corgan - The Future Embrace

Disturbed - Ten Thousand Fists

Oasis - Don't Believe The Truth

Madonna - Confessions on a Dance Floor

Hahhaha.. tbh.. I think expectations play a bigger role than people think when it comes to liking a movie or album... Sometimes it's really hard to shake the fact you thought something was going to kickass and you spend the whole movie or whatever waiting for the ass to start kicking in... And then sometimes you find a little gem from a band you've never heard before it can change your life.
Thats why I actually like hearing bad reviews sometimes.. makes some stuff seem more kick ass than it is because you're like "huh? wheres the shittyness?" I must say though.. it works better for movies than for albums.
As to whether it's the cure for cancer... well..I did put it at the top of my list :)

Maxy 01-24-2006 01:42 AM

i got mad hyped about twin cinema, and i never got past like 4 songs. :(
