Wow!! This fraud looked convincing

I was checking my emails today and found something quite interesting in my Junk-Mail folder.

It was from [email protected]

It basically said : "Unauthorized access to your PayPal account!

We recently noticed more attempts to log in to your PayPal account from a foreign IP address.

If you accessed your account while traveling, the unusual log in attempts may have been initiated by you. However, if you are the rightfull holder of the account, please visit Paypal as soon as possible to verify your identity:

Looks authentic... BUT, I hover over the links, and none of them lead to paypal. They lead to some php file on zha.sk

I google zha.sk and get a list of Russian sites... SO... of course I figure its a scam. And a damn good one if you're not paying attention.

The e-mail looks just like any other Paypal e-mail.

Anybody else ever get this one?

Btw, I have no idea what clicking on the link would do... my best guess would that it would install spyware... or maybe a password extractor... who knows.

Tom_PM 12-15-2005 01:47 PM

Sure I get all kinds. I dont have a paypal account. lmao :)

seeric 12-15-2005 01:48 PM

RayBonga 12-15-2005 02:18 PM

I also keep getting them.

Several times in non paypal e-mail accounts.

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 12-15-2005 02:21 PM

The multiple typos would be my clue.

NoWhErE 12-15-2005 03:01 PM

Lol, I said it was good, didn't say I was had by it.

First major clue was that it arrived in my spam box... dead give away right there.

Anyhow, just spreading the word for those that haven't seen it before. Someone might be a bit sleepy when they get it and accidently click on it.

MrJackMeHoff 12-15-2005 03:13 PM

if your full name is not in the "dear so n so" its not paypal.. Simple.

HammerALL 12-15-2005 03:25 PM

I've gotten that exact one before - and yeah looks very legit - I can see it fooling alot of people

cool1 12-15-2005 03:51 PM

I get those all the time
Once I went to the url and filled in the form with fake info and then forwarded it to paypal.

this is what I'm thinking. I've been getting a bunch of those per day for at least a year now.

Jace 12-15-2005 04:03 PM

jeez, i get like 10 of those a day from banks, ebay, paypal, etc....

good rule of thumb, if you are asked for any info over email, go directly to the site to enter it, don't click links in your email

BigCashCrew 12-15-2005 05:07 PM

Yeah, I've gotten that one before too. One time I was at the coffee shop and the owner asked me to check out this email she got from paypal. She wasn't sure if it was real or not. I think she would have fell for it if she hadn't asked. If you aren't internet savvy this kind of shit can trick you.

jacked 12-15-2005 05:08 PM

that shits been going on forever...

Bluewire Ross 12-15-2005 05:11 PM

I guess if you're an internet savvy guy, it's easy to spot a spam right away. But I feel sorry for the newbies...

Dirty F 12-15-2005 05:31 PM

You're new to the internet?

Doctor Dre 12-15-2005 06:00 PM

Phishing scam. Paypal are actually suing a bunch of guys that did this. This must be very profitable
