The only reason I even know who she is is because I was reading one of your cheesy little 'Hello' magazines on a Virgin Atlantic flight last month and her picture was in it in an article about Prince William (Who get's more press than he's worth. I was sitting next to a pretty babe (who turned out to be French) and asked her "Who is this old broad?" And guess what... She didn't know either! But that old bag got me into a 'lets talk about how stupid and irrelevant the old British Monarchy is now-a-days over dinner then drinks a my house' session.

No, the Queen is still alive. THe Queen mother, who used to be queen died.

It works like this:

When the King Of England abdicated the thrown to marry Mrs Simpson, the twice divorced American, the woman who became the Queen Mother's husband was his brother and therefore became King. When he was born he never thought he would be king. In modern terms it would be like Prince Harry becomming king,it isn't going to happen.

While he was king his wife was queen. When he died his daughter became queen. She is now Queen Elizabeth. When she dies it will be Charles that becomes King and then William and then his oldest child when he has one. As soon as the King died the Queen mother stopped being Queen but she was so popular that they created a role for her called the Queen mother.

She was popular because of her actions durring the Second World War. Look up the qoute about 'being able to look the East End in the eye'. Hell, even Hitler admitted that she was Britain's secret weapon.

Now, I am not a royalist and I get really uncomfortable sometimes when things get very royal over here. So much so that I am purposly leaving the country and going to France on the Jubilee in June.

These these days the royal family hold pretty much no influence over the public. They don't make the laws or have the ability to change them. Thankfully it is the Parliment that does this.

However, when this woman was queen that was different. They did have the infulence. So, this to many of the British, particuarly the older generation that lived through WW2 this is like a former president dying.

I bet when the next former US president dies we will be asking for respect. So, lets act like humans and give some in return.
